I feel USA had to win that game. Also, USA does trail Wales in regards to fair play points. The tie breaker is USA does have more yellow cards shown than Wales did, so, USA technically trails Wales.

If that tie breaker does apply in the end, Wales can defeat USA on that potential tie breaker.

Remember that Japan won out on the tie breaker in 2018 in their respective group.

I can't see England battering either America or Wales so it'll probably come down to who scores more against Iran.

I'm actually quite curious how Canada will do against Belgium. I have a feeling Canada might actually advance out of the group stage.

I've got a feeling either Belgium or Croatia will flop. Would be nice to see Canada get out of the group but they'll be dealt an incredibly hard task in the last 16 given the group next to them has Spain and Germany in it.

Last time Canada qualified, I wasn't even *2*!

One problem with football (soccer) I noticed compared to other team sports I watch is that the players so often seem to be in the face of the referee complaining after each decision which goes against them. It seems so disrespectful. If I was them I would start yellow carding for that kind of behaviour.

I would love to see this happen, however I will say in players' defence, there are zero competent refs in football.

Like, that's not a hyperbole. Every referee is complete and utter garbage. They're never helped by the vagueness of some rules, but they're all pretty crap for a myriad of reasons.

I've been around so many experts who only watch football during the world cup making claims that Canada will shock Belgium and Croatia saying they're old.

I watch a lot of footie and I think they are for sure gonna lose to Belgium but I think they can draw against CRO personally. There attacking options are fast and they work at a blistering rate down the flanks. It's gonna be interesting to watch against teams that aren't very quick in the back

Ahhh yes you're right. He said he is good to go, hasn't been confirmed yet.

I know what you mean. In rugby union for example there is too wide possible interpretation of individual rules, so after a game fans often feel the result was determined by whichever style of refereeing was given that day.

Croatia looked pretty good in Nations league which wasn't many months ago for what it's worth.

And yeah, De Bruyne is among the very best in the world still, but their other big names from their golden generation aren't really at their best any longer. Still think Belgium wins the group though.

Argentina just got a pen for a near identical challenge that happened to Maguire yesterday.

Saudi Arabia look much better than I expected. Just lacking the final ball but they've been almost going toe to toe with Argentina. I expect they'll get caught out on that offside trap sooner rather than later, though.

They're doing good with the offside trap, even if the second one more or less came down to where you think shoulder ends and arm begins. If Argentina gets the right side working better they could still win big though.

Martinez should be in defense in place of Romero.

Argentina was undefeated 36 matches in a row and loses now.

Mexican curse. Someone is always destined to miss out so Mexico can lose that last 16 game.

I expect Argentina to still go through. The group is wide open now, but I do think Argentina will win both of their remaining games.

To anyone who didn't watch that, Saudi Arabia were genuinely spectacular. Phenomenal defending, tactically brilliant especially in the first half and a couple of gorgeous goals. That's one of the most tense games I've ever watched as a neutral (even if I had some stake in it).

Maybe the winner's curse is going to affect the COPA America winners instead...

Yeah all the headlines are gonna be Argentina flopping especially because all media focuses on Messi so much, and there are some clear flaws that immediately removes then from being favorites, but Saudi Arabia deserves a lot of praise here as well. I'm not sure they were the better team, a draw would reflect the match better, but their finishes went in, Argentina's did not and they played really smart the whole game.

I fully expect Argentina to go through, maybe even in first still. If they were to lose a match, this was probably the best one, there's a decent chance it ends up making no difference. Romero wont start anymore, Martinez will. But despite of previous top 4 teams often enough losing group matches to weak teams before, this definitely removes Argentina from that favorite group they've been in. Their game on the final third was not good enough.

Also that head injury in the end looked absolutely horrifying.

Worst part of that result is that when the draw first happened in April, I was seriously considering Mexico and Poland over Argentina during that tme because of Messi's form at PSG and figured several other players were getting on. Then Argentina beat Italy, Messi got good again this season, I realiseed they were on a big unbeaten streak, and I figured "oh, maybe they are favourites alongside Brazil..."

People are gonna go beserk if Serbia manage a result against Brazil two days from now.

I would like soccer so much more if they overhauled some of the dumb rules it has because tradition

VAR should only be used for clear errors and not touch and go stuff that most of it has been used for.

Genuinely curious, which rules? I'm fine with offside being decided the way it is, any part of the body that can be used to score is a pretty sensible metric all things considered. Flawed but any way of deciding offside would be.
