13. Hob Gadling

Hob is one of the characters that has most recently climbed his way up toward the top of my favorites list. He flew pretty under the radar early on after we brought him back to Z'onn Z'orr in the first few weeks of the campaign, though given that we brought him back from the magical land of Brucke der Dunen, I should've realized much sooner had much impact he'd ultimately have on Bloodfruit.

In fairness, Bloodfruit has reason to avoid him; he took up a position as Z'onn Z'orr's resident blacksmith, a position that is very helpful but also involves such heavy use of iron that it would drive away even the most careless of fae. It was specifically a need for his services that ultimately drove them to first start to interact, and man did it click between them immediately.

Like I said in the initial posts of this topic, in a lot of ways I wanted to make Bloodfruit directly opposite of Obrov (which succeeded in some ways, less so in others). Obrov was a man who'd been beaten down so terribly that he was ultimately left faithless, and ironically ended up in hell. I've mentioned it a bit earlier in this ranking, but Bloodfruit is fully faithful, specifically to the seven immortal(ish) beings known as The Endless: Destiny, Dream, Death, Destruction, Desire, Despair, Delirium. She spends a good bit of her free time in the chapel, often napping when not praying toward the seven, but wouldn't find out until much later that under that same roof was one of Dream's oldest friends.

As a result of a bet made between Dream and his sister Death, Hob the human was given eternal life for as long as he wanted it, with the option to relieve himself of it every 100 years. He told this story to a startled Bloodfruit, who immediately became drawn in by his tale and terrified of his later suggestion that the Dream that was might not be the same Dream that is now.

What was initially a meeting out of basic necessity eventually blossomed into a real friendship, as she continually went back to hear more of his stories, even making an agreement that, should they both still be around for the next 100-year meeting, she would accompany him to meet Dream for herself.

Hint for #12: This character is not a human

Oh, how cool! Hob and Bloodfruit definitely seem to have a certain innate chemistry.

12. Radio Tuner

Starsa gets a ton of credit from the players (myself included) for being the fun, flying, inanimate object with a goofy sense of humor that accompanies us on missions, but you know who else fills that role and more? Radio Tuner! Just a little salty with Vis over this one, because otherwise I would've been the first to rank it, and show Radio Tuner the appreciation it deserves (pre-emptively predicting that when Scare makes a ranking, the little iPod that could will place there as well).

You could say that Radio Tuner is a comic relief and be fairly accurate, but it doesn't properly describe all that Radio Tuner is. Sure, it's funny, bopping around in the air and communicating entirely non-verbally (but hey, some of my favorite characters are the non-verbal ones!). It comes across as both the most fragile member of our team (it is, of course, just an easily-destructible mp3 player) while also the most untouchable, having speeds and abilties vastly outranking any of our own.

The limits of Radio Tuner's power are frankly difficult to quantify. It's shown itself capable of moving at extreme speeds, dodging enemies even the best among us wouldn't be able to. I believe it showed itself capable of teleportation at one point if I'm remembering right, zipping away and coming back with a team of heroes to help us when we were at our most desperate. Radio Tuner warps the very fabric of reality and does so on a whim, changing what our attacks do, increasing and decreasing damage given and received, warping the very arenas and environments we find ourselves in.

We've spent so much of this campaign finding superheroes and magicians to combat Darkseid and the Spectre, and I'm not entirely convinced Radio Tuner couldn't solo the both of them if it really chose to do so, and with a killer backdrop of music as it does. Maybe that seems like an exaggeration, but if we go to space to take on Darkseid in the final battle to end all battles, and suddenly Muse's "Supermassive Black Hole" starts playing, don't say I didn't warn you.

So we very recently actually ended up messing with time slightly that Radio Tuner himself inspired his own creation

11. Sir Justin Arthur the Shining Knight (ft. Winged Victory)

There are a lot of old-ass people in Z'onn Z'orr and Oblivion. Enough that you could probably throw a dart in the bar and accidentally miss and hit someone over 200 years old. One of the oldest we associate with is Sir Justin here, the Shining Knight, knight of the round table (yes, that round table) and original leader of the Seven Soldiers of Victory (that thing I just mentioned in the last writeup) (edit: that's not the last writeup anymore because I bumped Sir Justin up a bunch of spots since I initially did this writeup).

He's acccompanied by his valiant winged horse, the aptly named Winged Victory (who I originally had ranked here as a two character slot to further fuck with stats but ultimately figured I couldn't justify giving him a full 50% of the space when my main interactions with him have been riding him to and from the Justice League Antarctica base).

Almost immediately, a friendship based in mutual respect began to form between Bloodfruit and Sir Justin. One of the first things he said to her: "I am ironbound, fae. But I do not seek quarrel with you." For those out of the know, iron is extremely dangerous and potentially lethal to any of the fae. So dangerous in fact that the mere possession of it within the Fair Lands is considered a capital crime. Sir Justin's greeting was an attempt to be upfront about his knowledge of the weakness, while also trying to show that he was trustworthy. It worked, and they immediately began to bond over a longing fondness for better times in better lands and a mutual disdain for Queen Titania, who long, long before ruining Bloodfruit's life ruined Camelot in Sir Justin's time.

Time and time again he's proven himself to be one of Bloodfruit's most trustworthy allies, and one of the best friends she's made around Z'onn Z'orr.

Hint for #10: Sir Justin is very old, but this character is considerably younger, under the age of 20

One thing I like about Justin is he has archaic ways of dealing with people as well, and people butt against those often. Justin is a lot like Bloodfruit in being lost in translation to some extent. I think the pairing is pretty neat.

I can't say for sure anything in DC Comics, but in the canon of the campaign, it's been confirmed that Titania is the mother of Morgaine le Fey, who essentially brought Camelot to ruin

10. Black Alice

If this was a ranking of how much the characters actually like Bloodfruit, Alice would be very, very low. Which is kind of a shame, because Alice is objectively one of the best characters in the campaign, as has been described by just so many different players by now. I think every story about her has been told already, or close to it, including the one where I gave her a concussion 7 rankings back. One of many concussions she would get.

One thing Alice has specifically given me separate from all the other players is a creative outlet. I like to draw, and while I'm certainly not an artist by any stretch, I get a lot of my practice in by drawing characters from the campaign. I've drawn every player character from both campaigns (to varying success). I drew every PC from both campaigns as Kirby forms. Just recently I drew a bunch of player-chosen NPCs as little icon-type pictures as a sort of Christmas present. But one thing I've specifically tried my best to provide, as a sort of commission request from Scarlet, is some of the varying Alice forms that have never appeared in the comics and thus don't have an image for. I'm up to 5 so far (4 requested by Scarlet, one by Hombad) and it's just a fun exercise in creativity to really bring something unique to the table. And it's something I'd like to think everyone benefits from because, again, fuckin pretty much everyone enjoys Alice to no end.

8. Jay Hunter

One thing I've noticed about myself while making this list is that, in a handful of cases, I tend to enjoy characters that don't have much of a voice of their own, whether it's Radio Tuner flying and bopping along to music or Romalthi hiding silently behind a mask with no way to communicate beyond actions. Another character archetype I've found myself enjoying are those that can't particularly assert their own worth and really just need someone at their side. Jay Hunter fills both of those roles in a way, and is ultimately one of the things I'm most proud of in the entire campaign.

Probably about 50ish sessions back, we found ourselves in Dublin, Ireland. The situation in Ireland is a bizarre one, one of the most bizarre we've come across in fact. From what we could gather, Titania, tyrannical queen of Faerie, made some sort of deal, and in doing so transported many of the residents of the Fair Lands to Ireland. But they didn't all just appear in Ireland, they specifically seem to have taken the place of the actual citizens of Ireland. Leprechauns, Firebrand rangers and other magical beings have appeared throughout the countryside, and nobody's entirely sure what happened to the people of Ireland. Did they die? Did they get transported to Faerie? Or did they perhaps combine with the magical creatures that took their places?

Early on into the session, we're attacked by a banshee. A much shorter than a normal monstrous banshee, about 5 and a half feet tall and lanky. We eventually defeat the banshee, and it isn't long before Bloodfruit is at odds with the rest of her group. The others believe the banshee should put down; it's a dangerous monster that killed a potential ally. But Bloodfruit, being how she is, feels something special for the creature. It's dangerous, but it's also young and scared and only acting out of its root instincts.

Eventually the rest of the group gives into Bloodfruit's insistence, and as we explore we find in the banshee's possession the ID of a young boy named Jay Hunter. Reason suggests that the Jay Hunter of Ireland is the human whose place was taken by this banshee, but to this day we still don't know entirely what happened. Is Jay the child somewhere behind the mask of the banshee (who, in need of a name, we've called Jay ever since). Or maybe the human Jay is off in Faerie somewhere, or maybe he's dead.

But Jay the Banshee, despite being by any stretch an untameable creature of pure violent id, has taken on a weird sort of friendship with Bloodfruit, at least in one direction if not both. Jay is ever so slightly calmer with her than with other humans, and after many fruitless attempts to communicate with Jay in Ireland, she actually helped protect us (perhaps just by trying to protect herself) from incoming parademons. We brought Jay to Z'onn Z'orr's environmental chamber, but eventually had to move her out (as we needed the chamber and Jay is still too dangerous to be around people.

With the help of the Shining Knight and Nightmaster, Jay was moved out to the abandoned Justice League Antarctia HQ, where she nows treats the destroyed building as a sort of home, feasting on equated penguins that are foolish enough to waddle into her territory. And still, Bloodfruit attempts to find a sort of common ground with Jay, refusing to see the banshee as anything but a lost soul and one of our strongest potential allies.

Hint for #8: Kind of like Jay, this character was originally introduced to us as an enemy.
