18. Romalthi the Shaper

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/4/1/2/AAS3NhAAEAsU.jpg

Yep, couple of you called it, so here she is.

I have had no fucking idea where to rank Romalthi. At one point I had her in the 50 range. At one point she was in the top 10. At various times I've considered both ranking her 1st for the memes and leaving her off the list entirely (ok probably not so much the last one, she had to land somewhere).

Romalthi was a one-off character appearing in the Bewitched bar that we met way, way back when. Now, I say one-off, but I don't know for sure if that's the case, because she can appear again, it would just assumedly require meeting up with the remnants of Bewitched again. The bar itself has been abandoned, and the patrons of the magical bar are on the run out in the world (I believe they're in Salt Lake City right now).

During our time at the Bewitched bar, Bloodfruit leaves to go to the bathroom, only to find Romalthi there, a floating being that we're still not entirely sure the identity of. Is she a meta? A vengeful spirit? Who knows! (edit: I think Romalthi was called a wraith but I don't remember for sure.) But something about her just had Bloodfruit smitten.

She approached, immediately wanting to befriend the being, though Romalthi is not so easily swayed. See, Romalthi is a touch on the devious side (possibly just straight up evil, since, y'know, villainous magic bar), and has the just really fucking cool power of transforming others into whatever she chooses. She alters her face/mask, touches someone, and that someone takes on physical state of whatever it was that she chose to inflict on them, taking on visual attributes of her chosen victim. An anti-Rozetta, you might say.

In Bloodfruit's case, she took Bloodfruit's glowing rainbow skin, and left her literally falling apart as she slowly began to dissolve into a liquid. She made her way back out to the bar before even realizing what was happening, and the others were able to convince Romalthi to change her back into a solid form. For a character that literally doesn't have a face of her own, Romalthi is a bit obsessed with her appearance, and traded back the rainbow glow in exchange for the appearance of... Brad Pitt? This was literally like 2 years ago at this point so my memory is a little fuzzy. In fairness, I was also water at that point.

After all this, it didn't actually lessen Bloodfruit's absolute fascination with Romalthi; if anything, it only sparked it further, as the combination of the mystery around Romalthi and the limitless potential of her abilities left Bloodfruit somewhere between starstruck and infatuated. And yeah, a big part of that is just me, as the very concept of this character just fascinates me to no end. She definitely gets boosted up as being one of the earliest definitive examples of a "JB character," someone who appeals to me very specifically despite having very little interaction with anyone else.

Does Romalthi's appearance of maybe 1 hour several years ago really warrant this high of a ranking? Probably not. But Romalthi is also the best and I won't hear otherwise.

Hint for #17: This is a much more reasonable and predictable character to have ranked this high

17. John Constantine

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/9/0/3/AAOJ0pAADcMP.png

John Constantine is yet another character that comes into the campaigns with a lot of pre-existing bias toward them, but nobody holds more bias toward the character than Scarlet himself, who held him as one of his own favorite characters throughout all of the first campaign, which inevitably made him a favorite of everyone else too. Everyone was excited to see him appear immediately within Z'onn Z'orr as one of the preeminent residents of the Oblivion Bar.

But you know who else had pre-existing bias regarding John Constantine? Bloodfruit. And unlike the players, Bloodfruit did not particularly care for him. See, Bloodfruit's knowledge of the world outside Faerie is particularly limited, and she mostly knows what's told to her by Tim (he was #26!). Tim was drawn into the world of magic forcefully and against his will by the trenchcoat brigade, a group of powerful magicians made up of Constantine, along with Phantom Stranger (pre-mouse form), Mister E, and Doctor Occult. The event nearly cost him his life and left the relationship between Tim and John strained at best and volatile at worst. Add on the fact that Constantine, general ass that he can tend to be, doesn't like or trust the fae.

Almost immediately upon meeting, Bloodfruit and Constantine were at each others' throats, not trusting each other. They were forced to work close to each other within Oblivion, but rarely ever had a good word to say about the other.

All of this culminated in an eventual sit down with the two of them (and Alice, who was also there). Bloodfruit set up the meeting secretly as an attempt to try to trigger some of her other hidden powers (which, as mentioned before, are triggered by emotion, and if anyone could bring out negative emotion in Bloodfruit, it was John and Alice). Unwilling to ever led Bloodfruit get the upper hand, Constantine instead flipped the conversation on its head. Instead of enraging her, he... recognized her for how she's distinguished herself from other fae and made herself a true member of the magical community, ultimately inviting her to join the Shadowpact. This shock still manage to spark emotion though, triggering a concussive blast that flipped their table and left Alice with a concussion that made her think she herself was Constantine.

John's been one of the most consistently great characters across both campaigns and has been one of the more complex relationships formed with Bloodfruit so far.

Hint for #16: This is the highest ranked one-off character in this ranking

16. Pasiphae

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/5/3/5/AAS3NhAAEA93.jpg

well this is good timing. Several Kid summon guesses and nobody got the right one somehow

Nobody pointed out that it was suspicious I neglected to mention Pasiphae in Ferdinand's write-up. Does that mean you knew she was coming? Or did you really think I would somehow forget to talk about one of this campaign's most tragic figures?

I think Kid Eternity has been talked about before, but just in case anyone doesn't know, he has the ability to bring back anyone who has died for a limited period of time (I don't think an exact figure was ever given but it seems to be roughly in the few hour range most of the time). He initially was able to control this, but his powers, like many others' after A-Day, are a little on the fritz. His summons are often random, and with little idea what to expect, we do what we can to try and make their brief time back on Earth valuable, whether that be giving them closure, passing on a message to a loved one, giving them one more chance to flex their skills, etc.

Quite a few of these are deserving of HMs; a couple crucial ones that come to mind are Juliet Capulet (ie Romeo & Juliet), who wanted the chance to properly tell her story, and Little Miss Hollywood, a gone-too-soon starlet, who spent her few hours recanting the loss of her bright future and getting high in the shade.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/5/3/6/AAS3NhAAEA94.png https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/5/3/7/AAS3NhAAEA95.png

But none hit me nearly as hard as Pasiphae. Pasiphae was the wife and victim of King Minos, and son of the original bastard Minotaur, a monster that killed her as she birthed it, leaving her to die in horrifying agony and to spend her afterlife grief-strucken at the vicious slaughtering beast she brought into the world against her will. It's a story that tore violently on Bloodfruit's heartstrings, and mine as well.

Bloodfruit, often particularly drawn to these lost souls, wants to do whatever she can for those who have suffered so terribly, so against the advice of everyone around her, she tried to reassure Pasiphae that she shouldn't exist in shame and grief, spinning a story of how incredible and esteemed the race of minotaurs she created had become in the time she was gone. And I went to Ferdinand, who had become a close friend, thinking that his hatred for being associated with The Minotaur wouldn't outweigh his inherent desire to do good for someone who needed it. And holy shit was I/she wrong. He lashed out at her in a way he never had, leaving her equal parts terrified and angered by his stubbornness.

So she takes it upon herself to go with another idea, using a glamour she had made to transform herself into a (shorter) copy of Ferdinand, in order to help her find closure directly. This backfired too, and upon seeing the Faetaur, was overwhelmed by her grief and left worse for it. For everything she did, every path she took to try and make things just a little bit better for a woman that desperately needed and deserved it, she failed. It's sort of become a recurring theme for Bloodfruit, and again, we'll get to that more later.

In the end, Ferdinand and Pasiphae met for real, behind close doors, and when they opened she was gone back to wherever she had come from. Bloodfruit (and I) don't know what was said, or if Pasiphae ever really got that closure, and she's yet to go back to Ferdinand to address what she did or what ultimately happened. It was a story of desperation and loss, and what that legitimately brought me to tears.

Hint for #15: Not technically a one-off character, but we almost never get to see them

15. Snapper Carr

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/0/3/5/AAOJ0pAADYj7.jpg

Scare specifically commented on the hints being too straightforward so this is what you get

Snapper is the character that, more than anyone else, is benefitted primarily by just how much the players interact with him. Starsa's a close second, but no NPC has accumulated nearly as much in-session screentime as Snapper, the character who, by necessity, is present at the start and finish of nearly every mission.

With that much exposure to a character, it becomes easy to begin to see them as a part of your life within the campaign. Everyone has some sort of relationship with him, some much stronger than others, but at the end of the day he's just an interesting guy. He's simulatenously sweet while also being a dick, and you never know exactly what you're going to get. I feel like almost every player has been complimented and insulted by him at some point in the campaign by now.

Even in writing this, I'm wondering if perhaps I ranked him too high. Unlike most of the cahracters in the top 20ish, I don't have much in the way of specific stories about him, definitely not as strong as Scare might have, because the interactions, while never-ending, are almost always brief. But somehow I just can't think to justify putting him any lower. He's the character, more than any other except maybe like Alice or Patch, that would devastate the playerbase the most if we were to lose him.

He and Bloodfruit aren't particularly close, and he'll poke fun at her expense, but he'll also do things like help keep iron away from her and make sure that she stays safe and prepared. Ultimately Snapper is likely the best symbol of a true hero within the campaign, never halting, never tiring, and saving everyone time and time and time again. I legitimately cannot imagine the campaign without him.

Hint for #14: This character is not a white person. Probably.

Also can't really ask Saoirse about it because BATGIRLS but I'm sure shae's gaut eet wraeten da'hwn sohmwearere.

If you're going to take this long to get these posted they should at least be Pepper Spray-length write-ups, should they not? I've been reading along though, and honestly, some of these choices are questionable. First off, where the hell is Patch? Every single person ranked Patch, but what, Bloodfruit's too good to talk to a mouse? Bloodfruit hangs out with a literal Banshee that just screeches and eats penguin corpses, like get over yourself. You probably just left him off to screw with Shearshah's stats, didn't you? Wouldn't be the first time!

And Vostok, where is she? You like Vostok! Everyone likes Vostok, she has mean things to say about everyone and everything AND is part of the Doom Patrol. Screw it, this ranking is Thom and Vostok now.

14. Thom Kallor & Valentina Vostok

I mean, if you're gonna screw with the format of a very strictly formatted system, at least do it for the sake of someone worthwhile and not... is that a baby with an eye for a face? Really, JB?

Look, I get it, joke characters are likeable, but they need substance. I mean, look at me! I'm funny AND have major story beats. There has to be a balance. I mean, remember Tokyo? Remember my rehabilitation from the holding facility? What would you even know about that, huh? Nothing.

I shouldn't complain too much. 14 is a solid ranking. Three spots higher than Brennus put me and way higher than Saoirse did, the traitor. At least I'm above Romalthi.

Hint for #13: Am I even supposed to know who this guy is?

Post Script: I know this isn't fully accurate and is a touch more meta than I might be in discord, but what, am I supposed to mix the 3rd person omniscient with the 1st person in a single write-up? That's just sloppy.

Not only is Thom white, but his face has been shown multiple times.
