28. Multi-Man

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/0/3/9/AAOJ0pAADYj_.jpg

Am I really the first person to rank Multi-Man? That's surprising, because I have to imagine everyone that encounters Multi-Man tends to get a kick out of his antics. Except maybe Spirit, who doesn't always sanction buffoonery.

Some of you not from the campaign may recognize Snapper Carr, the teleporter that HAS ranked a couple times, and for pretty good reason. But ultimately, Snapper is just a single man serving as the main source of transportation for an entire organization that is constantly growing. Eventually, we needed a backups, and in steps Multi-Man, Injustice Leaguer turned Justice Leaguer turned Checkmater with the power of... anything, really.

See, Multi-Man is invincible in a way, capable of coming back to life as a new version of himself every time he dies. With each death and rebirth he is granted a new power, like a Dewormer that's actually useful. But what determines those powers? Only Destiny knows. Is there a full list of every power Multi-Man has so far? I'm legitimately asking, as I'm not sure.

Fast forward a bit, and Snapper is temporarily out of commission, so our only option for a teleporter is Multi-Man. Only problem is that Multi-Man can't teleport! But dangerous times call for dangerous measures, and sure enough, Multi-Man got shot in the head several times over by Checkmate agents until he could teleport. And it worked!

Sort of. He became able to teleport, though it took quite a lot of practice to become able to do so properly, and his first outing out ended up accidentally teleporting his team to Azarath. You know, that place you might recognize from Teen Titans as being where Raven's dad Trigon rules over. Not a fun place!

Multi-Man, like several characters I find myself drawn to, really balances the line between comic relief and tragedy. See, everything he's gone through in his life, no small part of which involves him dying many times over, has really ruined his mental state, leaving him a man who often struggles with an understanding of reality. It's a feeling Bloodfruit can relate to.

She does what she can to help people around her, but with Multi-Man, that's a bit more than what she's entirely capable of. At one point in an off state of mind, he sent her out on an all-important mission of acquiring toasters, and unsure entirely what a toaster was or why it would be important, she jumped headfirst into the task, only for him to not even really remember asking it of her. I haven't really checked back in on Multi-Man much lately, and I do feel a bit bad about it, as Bloodfruit has been off diving into different self-imposed quests.

27. Johnny Warlock

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/9/4/7/AAS3NhAAD-3r.jpg

In the Fair Lands, the true-born fairies are considered the upper class of society, and with class comes wealth. The fae don't use cash, but a system of golden coins called flourettes. After everything that went down with Brea that led to the destruction of her life as she knew it, she did the only thing left for her to do, taking all the flourettes she could snag from her fae family as a way to survive and fleeing in the mundy realm. In a shocking revelation, the shops of the London slums don't accept fae currency, and all the coins in her bag were useless, leaving her to resort to selling her magical fae blood to get by. Those coins were useless until as a member of Checkmate, she discovered Bewitched.

We've talked a LOT about the Oblivion Bar, the bar of the Shadowpact, the last line of magical defense. Bewitched is the direct opposition to the Oblivion Bar. Bewitched is home to the dredges of magical society, and just like Oblivion, Bewitched has got its own Flippy. Theirs, however, is not a bully-able young man with flippers for hands, but instead a one-armed, blonde-haired adonis.

Bloodfruit's gang of cohorts were reluctantly let into the bar, but Warlock's disposition toward them changed drastically when Bloodfruit pulled out a stack of her flourettes. As the group got adjusted to the environment and its small handful of patrons with endless drinks at their disposal, courtesy of yours turly, Bloodfruit sat herself at the bar across from Johnny Warlock, and the two clicked pretty much immediately.

It's hard to explain what exactly clicked so well given how far removed we are since the last time we've met, but it was one of the first times since her escape from Faerie that Bloodfruit was able to feel genuinely good and accepted. More than that, she felt glamorous, perhaps seeing just a glimpse of what could have been should things not have gone so wrong for her. And Warlock, he saw her. Not as some shifty, untrustworthy fae but as a legitimate companion across the counter of the bar. But maybe that's just because she was paying him and he's good at his job.

I've made it super obvious time and time again but I constantly feel an odd nostalgia for Bewitched, maybe for just being one of the integral sessions for making Bloodfruit into who she is.

Hint for #26: I've got one more double ranking left, and here it drops.

26. Tim Hunter & Molly O'Reilly

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/7/1/9/AAS3NhAAD_Dv.jpg https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/7/2/0/AAS3NhAAD_Dw.jpg

So, this one's cheating a little bit. I made this list of 52 before we'd actually met Molly in the campaign, but I knew she had to fit in somewhere, but also didn't want to bounce anything out... so here she is! Sharing a spot with Tim, as is proper.

Tim and Molly are particularly difficult to rank, and to explain why, I'll have to start at the beginning. When the idea for Bloodfruit as a fairy came about, the first thing I personally had to do was determine Bloodfruit's backstory, and doing THAT required research. Specifically, research on the apperances of the Fair Lands as they appear in DC Comics, primarily through a series called the Books of Magic.

The Books of Magic started out as the stories of Tim Hunter being taken through time, through the various realms, all under a prophecy that he was to become the greatest and most powerful magician of all time. One of his first stories involved him visiting the land of Faerie and almost getting tricked into being trapped there by Queen Titania. The later spinoffs, the Books of Faerie went more into the history of Queen Titania, her husband King Oberon, and the general layout of the Fair Lands overall. And I fell in love with it immediately. The original Books of Magic was perhaps my favorite comic I've read, or damn close to it, and Books of Faerie were just as gorgeous.

The Books of Magic were later expanded beyond their initial four issues into a full series, and that series revolved around Tim's various relationships, adventures, and so forth. He went to not just Faerie, but to Hell as well and much, much more. He dealt with all sorts of creatures and phenomena, but one of the most consistent people in his life was Molly O'Reilly, his on/off girlfriend who went along with him, got trapped in Faerie for a bit, developed some fire magic of her own before losing it, and I could go on and on about how good Books of Magic is.

Oh, by the way, Tim is the secret bastard son of Titania, queen of the fae and sworn enemy to Bloodfruit. That's a whole other story.

ANYWAY, MOVING ON. The reason ranking these two is so hard right now is because I went into this game with more bias toward the two than to any other characters in the campaign. Every PC has about 2-4 characters they're tied to in their own backstory. With Bloodfruit, it's Titania (sworn enemy), Tim and Molly. Tim and Molly were her two closest friends growing up in Faerie, but unlike her, they were not from Faerie, and eventually had to leave back to London. Bloodfruit herself could not leave so easily... until the day she did. And in a world of man where Bloodfruit had no way of actually contacting Tim and Molly, she ended up lost in London's slums, simply surviving until she reached Checkmate.

After so, so very long trying to find her closest friend, Bloodfruit finally comes across... Happy. Tim's fictional friend turned real, loyal creature. It would be a few weeks more before she finally met up with Tim in Time in a Bottle! Briefly!

You see, part of the reason ranking Tim is as hard as it is is because Scar knows how important Tim & Molly are to Bloodfruit's story, and dangles just little bits of interaction in front of her at a time. With how brief the interactions have been, it's difficult to justify a higher ranking than this, despite the fact that I know, ultimately, Tim and Molly both are going to be top 10 characters for me.

Tim is the Harry Potter before Harry Potter with unlimited magical potential, and Molly is the spunky and joyful lass at his side that could probably still kick his ass, magic be damned. The Tim we see now though is one struggling. His magic's almost all gone, he only has one spell left before being found by the looming Spectre. Molly too has found herself magicless, with little mean to defend herself in a terrifying magic-dominated world. This ranking is ultimately just a marker for now of everything I can't wait to see from the two of them.

Hint for #25: This character has already been mentioned in at least one other write-up

It's definitely tempting to put them higher! Sort of like I mentioned I'm a little torn right now as to how to balance my personal bias towards the characters with their apperances thus far, especially ranking them against people I've been interacting with more regularly for extended periods of time. Many of the people I have ranked highly are people I feel like I've almost entirely gotten the gist of the character, for lack of a better way to explain it, but with Tim & especially Molly (who we've just met) I feel like there's still a lot more to see.

25. M.O.R.F.I.U.S.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/2/0/3/AAcguBAADkzz.jpg

So it turned out I accidentally lied about the hint; I thought I had posted a write-up involving MORFIUS but I didn't actually do that. Whoops!

The non-campaigners following along with this topic heard some of the tale of MORFIUS in MI's ranking, but I don't know that you really got a full understanding of how absolutely hilarious MORFIUS was.

Just a quick recap, Bloodfruit, having taken up alchemy prior, used a tincture made with her own fae blood to find a tiny tamagotchi-like robot hidden in the couch cushions of a Tokyo apartment. MORFIUS takes on the vague appearance of Dream of the Endless, arguably the most famous of the seven near-immortal siblings that rule various aspects of humanity and the universe around them. That, combined with the name Morpheus (another name for Dream), the fact he gets fed sand (as in the magical sands of Dream), and Bloodfruit's entire lack of understanding of mundy technology led to her assuming that the bot was actually trapping the soul of Dream.

This led to a sense of manic desperation on Bloodfruit's part, as MORFIUS constantly begs to be fed and she cannot let down one of the beings she worships so thoroughly. Brennus matched her mania and then some, not because he believed it was a real being, but because he really likes tamagotchis. For a few straight sessions, the recurring catchphrase became:
MORFIUS: "Feed me sand!"
Brennus: "BLOODFRUIT, FEED HIM SAND!"

When I say I don't think anything has cracked me up more, I mean I legitimately was struggling to get out my lines. And Scarlet and MI both knew this, and at times would just throw in a "Feed me sand!/Feed him sand!" to fuck with me, and it always worked.

As time went on, MORFIUS began asking weird questions of Bloodfruit. Things like her mother's maiden name, her social security number, the city she grew up in... all questions that 1. were obvious phishing schemes and 2. were things Bloodfruit, having grown up in Faerie, wouldn't have any usable answers for. It kind of made them a perfect pair, as Bloodfruit would constantly feed useless information to the bot. Toyman revealed that the toy was, indeed, just a toy, and a malicious one at that, feeding the information of the user to some far off person or company whose identity we still don't know.

And yet... Bloodfruit wasn't about to accept that explanation. Bloodfruit might not understand the mundy world, but she's not dumb, and in the case of MORFIUS, she either can't or won't accept the idea that MORFIUS is nothing more than what he appears. Over time, she's come to embrace MORFIUS as not being the true embodiment of Dream, but still holds firm that, for whatever reason, only she is able to see MORFIUS as being more than just a corrupted plaything.

Hint for #24: This is a character that, at first appearance, absolutely doesn't come across as a JB character
