I want to go see a movie this weekend but my local cinema has a strict 'no singles allowed' policy. Do you think it would be worth it to hire a prostitute to see the movie with me? Will the usher know and not allow me in anyway?

No singles means you can't leave a single seat open between what you book and what was already booked. It doesn't mean you have to show up with someone else.

That makes sense. It would be annoying if you're trying to sit together, but a bunch of people bought every other seat.

Ive been in sold out theaters before, where ushers would require people to move closer together to open up any seats that were open in the middle of the rows.

To the people who dont get it, an O is an occupied seat and an X is an open seat. So they want a theater that would otherwise look like this:

O O X O O O O X O O X O X O
O O O X X O O O X O X O X O
O O X O O X O O O X O X O O

To instead look like this:

X X O O O O O O O O O O X X
X X X O O O O O O O O O X X
X X O O O O O O O O O O X X

This way, it opens up more seats for people who are in pairs.

Think of the math on that. Eventually there will be a single seat left open. Usually a triple seat section that will be unbookable, even to a couple.

Eventually, sure. Still a better outcome than dozens of scattered, empty single seats because people decided to use Urinal Logic

If that was a stupid policy here, Id just try to sneak in. If you get caught, you just gotta leave without arguing back and you're fine. Nobody wants to waste their time dealing with someone they can easily tell to leave. Most stuff if you just be like "oop, you got me. Gg." You're fine. It's getting defensive and doubling down that makes others get involved. 9 times out of 10 the person doesn't care enough to report something that can easily keep as nothing

It's selectively enforced based on theater / movie. Basically unless they're expecting a theater to be sold out they don't enforce it.

I remember watching Seinfeld when I was a kid and there was an episode where theyre going to the theater but george and jerry were late cause shenanigans, so Elaine had to hold their seats. I was deeply puzzled. It wasnt until years later I would learn of the lunacy of the American theater experience. You dont buy a ticket to a specific seat! You just buy a ticket to the movie and sit where the fuck ever. No wonder such madness as this topic parleys is the result of such anarchy.

The theaters in my city started the assigned seats a couple years ago. You select your seat when you buy your ticket.

That's no longer a thing in most theaters. It used to be that you'd just buy a ticket and sit wherever. Reserved seating was only for the more expensive showings. Now though, all showings are reserved seating.

I can't remember when that change kicked in though. It was gradual.

it was gradual, but I remember it kicking into full gear around the Avengers Infinity War/Endgame time-frame.

And I wouldn't be at all surprised if prepping for those sealed the deal

It is. When you try to leave a single seat, like buying 4 seats but buying seats 2-5, leaving set 1 open, it'll advise you that you cannot leave open a single seat.

In most theatres, it's only the policy if the movie is expected to be a near sellout.
