I would actually argue the opposite - DKC 3 is an objectively superior game to 1 with far more creative levels, but the art design and atmosphere of 1 are much more appealing to me. They're basically tied for me and I usually still put 3 > 1 if I'm forced to rank, but it's tough to do so. I like the heavy characters, I think the theming/cohesion isn't as strong as the other two, and I absolutely hate every single Wind level. But like...yeah it's still probably better than DKC1.
