No no fucking no

The Mayans did not say the world was ending. It was when they picked an "age" to end. At most, they were predicting some shift on society that would change our world but not kill it

I wrote a school paper on Mayan on Jr high and I had to read a bunch of books about them. I dont even remember anything about 2012 during that study

When people were freaking out, I did not understand why. The 2012 thing was made up by idiots who didn't understand Mayan culture

To be fair, no they didn't. People just misinterpreted what the end of their eras meant.

The Mayans would've just thought that it was the start of a new cycle.

And wasn't the date "wrong" anyway as the Mayans didn't account for leap time or something? I remember hearing that on one of my birthdays.

The Mayans first had a calendar that lasted 365 days.
...well, technically they had multiple ones based on the movements of planets and moons, but the one that mattered was the one with 365 days.
They believed that their God would destroy the universe at the end of the calendar, unless they pleased him with songs, dances and sacrifies. Every year they were worried, had they pleased their God enough or not? They didnt truly know until the day ended and they saw the stars once again.
Worrying about the end of the universe every year is not good for your mental health, so they mixed some calendars so they got a new one that lasted 52 years. That is a long time to please your God, and you only had to worry about it once in your lifetime.
But then they thought "Why worry at all? What if we mix ALL the calendars for an extremely long calendar?".
Which they did. Ao they got one that lasted 63,081,429 years.
Some mistranslations made us believe that the calendar was much shorter and ended at Decemer 21 2012, but that was only when one "month" ended and another one started.

It isn't. I specifically studied the calendar. None of my research ever mentioned that the world was going to end in 2012

This was back in like 1994 or something. I think you misunderstood what I did. I was doing a research paper for class. We had to research and write about a subject connected to Mexico. It could be anything. I chose the Mayan civilization. Are you really trying to say that conspiracy tv shows were more trustworthy than academic books about mayans I used for a school project?

I mean any paper I wrote in uni is probably ridiculous

My paper i don't think even talked about the end of the world. Unless I mentioned human sacrifice. but that was more of an Aztec thing. Mayans did it but not on the levels of the Aztecs. The Aztecs did it to keep the world from ending.

But I do remember being confused years later when people started talking about 2012. I always thought it made no sense

also my paper was for a 6th grade Jr high in Oregon. I doubt anyone but my teacher read it. This wasn't a academic paper written in college or beyond, and published in a scientific magazine. I'd be honored but also confused if I had that level of influence on society when I was in 6th grade

yeah, at the same time a change in ages is also the end of a world in a sense. Do you know if they associated a change in calendar age with anything specific? i don't think it would all happen in 2012 because a decade is not just the first year of the decade

I dont remember what I read about specific ideas of a future age. But I think it was just believed some great event would happen. I guess possibly bad but also could have been good. Like if we met aliens. That might mark a new age
