At most, they were predicting some shift on society that would change our world but not kill it I wrote a school paper on Mayan on Jr high and I had to read a bunch of books about them. I dont even remember anything about 2012 during that study When people were freaking out, I did not understand why. And wasn't the date "wrong" anyway as the Mayans didn't account for leap time or something?
