Watching it for the first time in decades and every scene with Bruce Willis around other people is laughable. He's either just sitting there silently while people talk and occasionally making a face or he's talking while someone is sitting by themselves staring into space for an extended period of time. The rest of the movie is still pretty solid but I'm starting to think Shyamalan was a fucking hack way longer then we thought he was.

I mean everyone got fooled. After you know the truth, the Bruce Willis scenes are incredibly obvious. There are so many clues. But on the first viewing, people aren't looking for those clues

Also I've been told that the color red is used in every single scene in the entire movie in which a ghost is present. Someone told me Chinese people would pick up on that but not most Americans

Yeah. You have to wonder what was going through Bruce's character's head when the only conversation he's had over several months is with that kid. The twist doesn't stand up at all to the smallest bit of scrutiny.

The kid says it. Ghosts only see what they want to see. The idea is he didn't notice that his wife wasn't talking to him. His mind twisted things so that he didn't pick up on the stuff that would give away the reality. While the movie may have presented a certain image to us of those scenes, it is possible to him it looked different

Maybe he actually imagined her talking to him sometimes and the movie just didn't show it

Also time is said to pass differently for ghosts. He may not realize the movie lasts months of time

I think that's what makes it great. It's obvious on repeat viewings. Before you just think he's a quiet guy.

The scene with his wife changes context completely after you know.

He's a ghost in denial. I don't think his reality really works the same in general.

And the ghost rules seem to only apply to him. All the other ghosts appear in the midst of their deaths. Do the ye olde folks hanging from nooses not know they're dead? Bruce is just walking around without any fresh bloody holes in him. Is he in extra denial?

I knew the twist too by the time I saw it. One of the most spoiled movies along with Fight Club. And wondered why people didnt catch it on a first viewing. He literally got shot at point blank range there was a time jump and they just act like that didnt happen for some reason. Knowing the twist made me realize that was the point he died.

How do we know there aren't other people in the background who are ghosts but don't know?

That sorta stuff seems pretty normal for ghost lore. You have the ghosts with traumatic deaths who are stuck in that moment. But you also have the lost ghosts who don't know they're dead and are confused about their situation.

It has been a long time since I watched the movie but I think the implication was that Bruce Willis already felt distant in his personal life before he died. So he didn't feel any different sitting in a room feeling ignored.

It's super obvious in hindsight, but it does work in the context of the rules that the movie establishes for ghosts.

Like all great twists it hits equal parts "I never saw that coming" and "how did I not see that coming?"
