Long story short when Alexander the Great destroyed the Persian Empire and beyond and then died shortly after his generals grabbed up different portions of the land they conquered. For about 300 years after the conquest the descendants of his general Ptolemy played a balancing act between appealing to the local ancient Egyptian religion while portraying themselves to the outside as being the heirs of Alexander the Great and totally Greek/Macedonian. They started drinking their own kool aid in terms of being "Pharoh" and part of being a god meant being apart the locals so they started marrying inside of the family to the point where they were marrying brothers to sisters. Being a "god king of Egypt" didn't mean shit to people in Greece itself, or in the successor states still running portions of Alexanders conquests out east (Selucid Empire) and it definately didn't mean shit to the Romans who ended up conquering all of those people over time but the Ptolemies would present one face to those groups of powerful potential foes/allies and another face to the people they were ruling. <cite>Atralis posted [p:970498057] in Hot Take: ...
