I was working a 2200-0600 shift on a squadron operations floor at Osan AB, South Korea... when Y2K came a knocking.

It took out one of our satellite links back to the US for a few hours.

I can't quite remember what I was doing at midnight. But I remember people being excited about a new millennium, and then people saying "actually the new millennium doesn't start until 2001"

I also remember thinking the old computer programmers of decades past were idiots to have not accounted for the year 2000, when they built all their code. Wasn't the whole issue that the dates in code only kept track of the last 2 digits for a year? Like they just assumed nobody would use computers in the next century. Or they were just lazy and short sighted

Yeah, the computer thing wasn't really a big deal. It was kind of like the 2012 doomsday scare, it was a more of a meme that most people didn't actually take seriously.

It really wasn't that big of a deal.
Like people talked about making sure computer systems were updated before it happened but at actual midnight it wasn't a thing people were actually worried about.

Yes, the only things I remember actually being a problem were:
  • Our school's typing tutor program couldn't handle dates past 12/31/99 which caused the statistics chart screen to show a bunch of gibberish
  • My email client displayed the year on new emails as 19100 for awhile

Also I remember a sign at the supermarket saying they reserved the right to limit or deny returns of water and other supplies in the event the world doesn't end

I don't remember what I was doing back then. Probably playing Playstation 1. I just remember putting a lot of the Y2K crisis books in the comedy section at a book store. I am aware that something happened on a smaller scale perhaps but most of these problems seemed to be fixed before anything major happened. I still find it somewhat comical I guess how much panic there was over it though. I knew somebody's parents who were stockpiling tons of food.

I thought it was a stupid thing to worry about but apparently some people who are really into computers seem to think it was a big deal and we have to thank so many people for saving us from a world disaster (I guess). Or the fact that everything was fixed before it would have became a major problem anyways. I don't know who to believe.

I remember there being Y2K compliant software coming out. There were so many people trying to make money off this supposed catastrophe. I don't remember if I was on the computer at midnight, I probably wasn't. Also I was in my last year of Highschool so there may have been school the next day lol
