So Battlebots tweeted earlier that they are revealing all the planned fights for the season and that they'll update the results the day after the fights...but the website was already updated for today's fights. The tweet is gone now and hopefully the website has been changed, but just be mindful if you are looking through the Battlebots website today.

Did BB make any rule changes due to last year?

https://www.reddit.com/r/battlebots/comments/xdi169/updated_rules_for_2022_are_available/

Notable changes, many of which were influenced by the controversial Minotaur vs. Witch Doctor and Hydra vs. Tantrum fights from last season:

* Match Stewert acts as an intermediary between teams and the judges to better explain rules to the teams, and advise judges on the rule interpretations. Essentially, more communication and clarity between teams and judges mid-fight.
* Teams can make an appeal on a judge's decision through the Match Stewert within 1 minute of a decision being announced, but if their requests get declined, they can't appeal again for the rest of the season.
* A bot that has gotten stuck to the arena will no longer be released. Essentially, no more controversial "stop the fight, unstick the stuck robot, and continue the fight" decisions with the arena itself, only when two bots are stuck together with each other and can't separate.
* A bot no longer has to show controlled movement to keep the match going. Essentially, crab-walking with one wheel, moving in a circle, hopping around with recoil from firing an axe/hammer, etc., will still be considered mobile for the purpose of avoiding a count-out. A robot has to be 100% not moving (or the team can just put their controller down and keep the robot still) for the count-out to start.
* A minibot will be removed from the arena if it gets stuck with the opponent more than once. Minibots can still be used to off-center opposing bots, but they're subject to the same "must release after 10 seconds" limit as normal bots, and they get removed from the fight if they fail to release enough times.
* If both teams don't engage each other for a period of 20 seconds or longer, the fight will be ended and sent to the judges. I would guess this is partly to prevent battles with two severely wounded bots with barely any mobility limping around the arena to prolong a fight and partly to prevent non-aggression situations like Hydra sitting still waiting for the opponent to approach and the opponent circling them for like a minute waiting for an opening.

Also worth mentioning: the Upper Deck is still mentioned in the rules, but its exact measurements aren't shown like they were last year. They're not removing it, but perhaps they're making it smaller and less obstructive than it was last season. We'll have to wait and see.

Quantum was like the second coming of Razer and I really liked it. I'm glad they're finally back after the pandemic situation kept them away.

I like this actually. A lot less ambiguity this way. I can think of a few times when the opposing team was really depending on a count out and wasting precious seconds when it didn't come.

Yeah, I think this is a good change. It was definitely the most controversial of calls during the season.

Exactly. Between this rule having more clarity and the teams having the ability to communicate with the refs mid-fight through the match stewert, there should be far less "waiting for a count-out that might not happen" situations. If they're moving, keep hitting it. If they're not moving, ask the match stewart to ask the ref when a count is incoming.

Yeah, agreed. It always felt like there was a bit of a referee tilt one way or another based on the team in question, and the part of the season.

On the flipside, weapon durability will be more important than ever, since a bot that has one functional wheel will require more damage to avoid a judges' decision. If your weapon goes out, you're finished accumulating points, barring a ring out.

IT'S ROBOT FIGHTIN' TIME! Witch Doctor (last year's runner up) vs. Ribbot is kicking off the show and the season. Let's go Ribbot! Or not... Witch Doctor just absolutely demolished the poor frog. That was brutal.

Also, maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me, but it does look like the Upper Deck is a little smaller than last year. It doesn't go as far towards the corners.

I believe it was 3 per bot last season and the season before. It was 4 per bot in the earlier seasons, but they had to condense the taping sessions a bit due to COVID-19 restrictions.

RIPperoni looked good for a little bit, but once the wedgelet was bent and the bot was thrown off balance, it was downhill from there. The fact that the weapon landed some solid hits at the start and stayed operational for the whole fight despite the bot ragdolling itself around the arena like Darby Allin is promising though, so if they can work out the balance issue, it could be dangerous. Shatter vs. HUGE is up next.

This season is all about a modernize-or-die mentality. Free Shipping is a contender now but almost every drum spinner is a glass canon without a proper self-righting mechanism.

Quantum is still the best piercing weapon. Ripperoni is a bot to watch even without gyro stability. Wheel walking is a valid strat now and we can thank Minotaur too. Gruff should go back to the Complete Control-tier flame from previous seasons. Shatter needs to become a hammer saw.

THE CHAMP IS DOWN! Minotaur didn't just beat Tantrum, but dominated the defending champion! I can't wait to see if can keep up that pace deep into the season, because that was the best Minotaur has looked in a while. All in all, that was a pretty great episode to kick off the season.

Tantrum Minotaur

Tantrum did what they always do and played too conservatively with their puncher at the start. Usually because they're so durable, they have time to wait. But Minotaur is too much of a beast and completely upended that strategy. Hopefully they learn from this mistake and we see more aggressive driving in future matches.

And on another note, I LOVE the banners!

Yeah, it was a good episode to start the season. Since a lot of bots are in top form this time around the technical aspect of being able to land the first serious hit will likely make a big difference in the fights. Quite a few fights were decided by one good strike.

Other than spinners I can see hammer-saws racking up a few wins. I don't like hammers, and I don't like saws, but combine the two for a focused hit and it does manage to thrash opponents.
