I was thinking this. For people with empathy or who actually care about their duties as a leader it must be mentally exhausting and draining to be constantly having to make difficult decisions that will always 1) have people constantly attacking you no matter what and 2) will almost always have negative outcomes for at least some people.

I don't follow NZ politics. Is there something in particular that caused this?

Her party is polling very poorly at the moment and it looks more like shes resigning to avoid an embarrassing defeat to preserve her legacy as she is rumoured to be eyeing up a UN job in the future after politics

There's a ton of excessive vitriol going her way the past couple of years. People genuinely acting like she was some sort of evil dictator who went out of her way to piss in their porridge.

I'm not surprised she decided to book it, I'm just surprised she didn't do it sooner.

Her daughter is coming up on 5 years of age already and Ardern's been PM since before her daughter was even born, plus I'm sure her and Gayford want to finally go ahead with their wedding.

I wouldn't be surprised if she came back at some point.

Probably from the Christchurch shootings, where New Zealand somehow believed it could fight the Streisand Effect and ordered the video destroyed worldwide, and then the huge gun-grab soon after.

This would've been my guess as well. IIRC New Zealand had among the strictest protocols in the non-authoritarian world, and it worked quite well for a time; but covidiocy is even more contagious than the Omicron variant, and I have to assume that even NZ is being overtaken by that mentality at this point.

If you think it was about fighting the Streisand Effect, you're missing the point.

Also, firearms don't really play into our concept of freedom, so it wasn't as big a deal to us as it might be for other countries.
