Honestly, after Genshin Impact, I feel like the bar has been raised a lot and Nintendo knows it. Considering Genshin adds new areas to its world every six weeks or so, there better be more than just a few new floating islands in Tears of the Kingdom.

Lol, I just posted this like an hour ago because I've been feeling the same unease. If it was a brand new game, I'd give it more of a benefit of the doubt. But all we've seen so far is very little and basically the same map again. With 3 months remaining, I would have expected some more gameplay footage if they had more confidence.

I don't think Hogwarts is gonna win, but I'm also thinking Zelda won't either. We barely have any info and it comes out in 3 months and that's a bit concerning. There's also several other big games coming this year.

The money involved with buying a game is not really significant; its the investment of time that matters.

Also, theres no shortage of games that reviewed very well that I didnt enjoy at all, so youre always gambling on that front really.

How much did we know about any previous Zelda game before release?

  • OoT 3D Zelda woo-hoo!
  • MM It's gonna be OoT but with shape-shifting masks.
  • WW there will be cartoony graphics (I don't even think we knew about almost the whole game being on an ocean).
  • TP we're gonna play as a dog (I remember that being literally the only thing I knew going in).
  • SS I think I literally knew nothing about it. Most likely the motion controls were the hyped up thing about it.
  • BotW the biggest Hyrule ever and we'll be able to go anywhere we want from the start of the game -- even fight the final boss if we want.
  • TotK there will be sky islands, new powers, and we'll be spending time underground in this one. Thank God, bc one thing I noticed about BOTW was there were no caves.

it doesn't matter tbh. it could be the most soulless copy-paste job with two, maybe three new features that we've already seen in the trailers, it'll still win goty, zelda fans and nintendo fans will still praise it as the second coming and spend the year talking about how it does everything better than every other game.
then after that year's up, people will start telling the truth, just like with botw. joke fanbase, they make me ashamed to be a zelda fan and nintendo fan.

Nobody's going to give a shit about your opinion if your opinion just boils down to "you're wrong for liking this thing and I'm better than you".

I think it's reasonable to assume it could be worse than BOTW just because they were developing through the pandemic. I'm not concerned about the lack of information. I think that's been deliberate. Even going into BOTW there was still a lot we didn't know.

Has anything else outside Pokemon attempted a full blown sequel using the same exact map and taking 6 years to release?

Sony was able to do HD 1 and 2 within 5 years. Same for GoW 1 and 2. All were different games.

The only reason BotW got such a grand reveal is because they had so little done with the rest of Switch's lineup and they weren't ready to outright announce the Switch yet.

Hell, there was some discourse leading up to OoT's release. A couple of months before it came out was when they revealed that you jumped automatically instead of manually. I remember a lot of people complained on Nintendo's forums about it being a step back, makes the game play itself, it inhibits exploration, etc.

There was also the reveal of Link having an earring, which...was a whole other can of worms...

Yes. And this game has been in development for far longer so I am expecting a meatier experience. If they took five years to make what is essentially full price DLC I will join in the hate but frankly if that's what this is we would have gotten it years ago.

Did we really know a lot about BotW prior to release? We certainly saw more gameplay, but this is a scenario where theyre using the same world and mechanics plus extras, and the extras are going to be the main draw for fans out there. Show too much, and you risk spoiling surprises, especially for a revamping of an open world as thoroughly travelled as this one. Same goes for combat mechanics, too.

If they intentionally show too much new stuff, a lot of the surprise is ruined. If they show too much of the old stuff, then there are people calling it a mere DLC padded into a new game. So theyre showing a very sparse amount.

in terms of game play systems we knew more going into BotW than any past 3D zelda, with OoT a close second.

Because these two games were the largest single shift in the overall gameplay of the franchise, with OoT as the first 3D we saw a LOT of articles about core gameplay mechanics before release (but nearly every article and screenshot depicted beta environments that were not in the final release, we saw virtually nothing of Hyrule itself or what sort of environments we'd be exploring).

BotW similarly got a lot of extra pre-release attention because it represents the largest deviation from the expected formula, even moreso than OoT(which while a huge shift in core gameplay, still maintained the same basic formula established in 2D zelda games). Love or hate the changes, that level of experimentation with the franchise was a big deal and the level of transparency with a transition that huge was necessary. We still saw very very little of the world itself, mostly just the great plateau and a couple of shrines.

So like, we basically got ONE game in the franchise over 30 years that pulled out all the stops and showed us tons of new gameplay systems and multiple envrionments and puzzles that were going to be in the final game and suddenly all yall capital G Gamers with zero attention span or memory think that's just the norm. It isn't. Nintendo has always been notoriously tight lipped pretty much right up until the game is at your door.
