Eh it was alright. It just felt like tons of filler. It was just an hour of rawdogging between side characters that dont reallly mean anything in the story and then 10 minutes of Joel finding a truck >_>

That's the funny part. People are out here like "bro, they ruined Bill! They turned him into filler, etc etc" when, like you said, he was just a side character in the first place.

So is basically everyone who isn't Joel and Ellie, if you want to look at things that way.

If they had kept to the game, it would've just been an hour of MCU banter and zombie fights in a school that don't mean anything before 10 minutes of Joel getting a truck.

If we're getting filler either way, I'd rather the one that actually tells a story and makes the side characters more endearing than just mindless video game violence that doesn't make sense for a TV show.

All these people who complain about no Burster/skipping the school stuff....are they just wanting every episode to be Joel and Ellie shooting their way across America more like Mad Max.

That would get old very quickly.

My least favorite episode of the 3 so far but it was still a great episode. Definitely biased because I (stupidly) went into the episode with expectations and it was a big deviation (relative to the first 2 episodes) from the game. i'll have to give it another watch, but the acting from the two leads was top notch. Can't deny that I would have liked to see the school, but no big deal

I thought it was a little dumb when Bill just stood in the road with no cover shooting at the raiders (i think he would have had a better plan/setup than that) but meh, nitpicking. Wonderful series so far

It's a good example of why we should thank god that random gamers don't end up writing for TV/Film lol

I want the story to focus on Joel and Ellie since that's what the game is. Giving an entire episode to dead side characters doesn't add any value to what's important in the show.

I've played the game and I know the ending. The bond between Joel and Ellie is built upon their journey together and all of the obstacles they overcome. Bill and Frank play a miniscule role in that.

The ending has nothing to do with Bill or Frank at all. This episode was filler and not necessary to tell Joel and Ellie's story.

Bill's letter in this episode is what develops Joel from "escorting Ellie out of obligation" to "escorting Ellie because he doesn't want to keep failing to protect those around him."

Joel's only three friends in the apocalypse just died back to back, and he's still haunted by Sarah, and Bill's letter made him see things in a new perspective. It's not filler.

If anything, it's exactly what you're talking about: developing the bond between Joel and Ellie. While also giving us a really nicely told story on top of that.

Episode 2 ended with him doing it because Tess told him to and he was respecting her final wishes.
Now it's his own choice.

The ending of episode two had Joel deciding to dump Ellie at Bill and Frank's, this episode had him choosing to take her himself.

For someone who was smart enough to build that complicated fence, he's an idiot for just going in the middle of the street without cover just shooting at raiders >_> Zero surprise he got shot. Why the fuck wouldnt he shoot from his house or something

tbf, maybe he didn't have much combat experience/smarts.

That was like 10 years into the apocalypse, right? If that truly was the first group of raiders they'd encountered in all that time, maybe he was just out of practice. Plus it was the middle of the night so he was probably startled out of bed and wasn't fully awake yet.

(Or maybe they're making fun of how some players actually approach the gun sections of the games. I know I love to just charge in and shoot without attempting to cover.)

It's a great episode, but I do prefer the game's version. Sad we won't see that version of Bill interacting with Joel & Ellie.

Ah well. Is what it is. Not like it's bad by any means.

Pleasantly surprised each of these topics dont purge in a day or two every time I do one.

Simple and correct.

You know, I gotta admit, I was getting the vibe that the episode was gonna really shoehorn in the gay angle, but that was actually a really beautiful and well done love story. Had me chocking up at the end there.

In the game, Joel and Ellie show up to Bill's after navigating through traps he had placed around his town, Bill and Ellie have some banter, and Joel says he needs a car. Since Bill owes Joel some favors from past encounters, he helps the duo get some car parts that are in a nearby school and we get a neat level surrounding getting through the school and fighting a big zombie. Along the way, we find the body of Bill's partner Frank, who hung himself after leaving Bill and getting bit. After getting a working car, Joel and Ellie leave, and we never see Bill again.

Wow I feel like that would've been much more interesting than the ending pact we got. And it leaves Bill open for further stuff

It was interesting for a video game, since you're in control of the combat and exploration. But watching Joel and Ellie navigate a school for an hour while bantering with Bill would not have been good television.

It would if it had action and a bloater. Far as action goes, that was one of the best levels in the game.

i like what they did here but I cant help but be disappointed.

Following up an episode where the team snuck through a building and fought Clickers with an episode with the team sneaking through a school and fighting a Bloater probably just would've felt super repetitive. Esp to the audience member who didn't play the game.

We're just getting a Bloater at some point anyway, iirc, so they might've just moved some stuff around to make things feel more natural for a tv show.

Yeah. Either way you get some development for Joel that pushes him in the same direction. Great stuff.

Once again we have another topic lasting until the following episode premieres instead of purging. This is great.

I may be misremembering the original game but Joel and Tess being smuggling partners who refer to themselves as 'good' quote early on in the outbreak is the biggest sign yet that this Joel is nowhere near as bad as the game depiction. There's still the mystery of what him and Tommy were up to together but I'm sure by now it was heavily implied that Joel used to do some horrible stuff before the events of the game. Which is I think is gonna make the ending feel a bit more sympathetic to Joel interestingly enough.

I feel like there's just a lot of stuff in this episode that is still gonna feel relevant all the way throughout Part II. The letter obviously foreshadows the ending but there's stuff here that can go further. The spaceship comment about the car is nice. Also a big part of Bill's lesson here was also about letting go as well as learning to love. Letting go of his isolation, his shelter, a gun, etc.

Part II's tragedy is all about characters refusing to let go and how it can ruin what you currently have.

Nah, I think that Joel and Tess just went through some shit after that meeting. Tess mentions in the second(?) episode that they've done some shitty things and that saving Ellie is their chance to make up for it.

I wonder if we get flashbacks in the next episode to demonstrate that Joel is/was a garbage person. In the game, it's implied that Joel is familiar with some of the Pittsburgh gang's tactics because he used to pull some of the same shit.

Fantastic episode.

Deviation from the game doesn't matter to me as long as they told a good story that steered Joel in the same direction, which they nailed.

They've already made Joel more sympathetic than his game counterpart because in the show he's trying to get to his brother. In the games he was just trying to get weapons and shit, and his brother had stopped talking to him ages ago.

In their first encounter with Marlene in the show, Joel does have a line thats something like Youre the ones who turned my brother against me so I imagine itll be similar to the game in that Tommy got sick of Joels methods of survival.
