Sounds like something similar to what my cousin and I do for Youtube TV. YT gives me 3 months and then my cousin just logs in with a code I give him from his home network and then I'm good again for 3 months.

People will literally go to war for their precious shows/movies. This will make a barely noticeable dent in their numbers.

Wish that wasn't the case, but I have zero faith that people will separate themselves from Netflix. They didn't do it when the library got smaller/worse. They didn't do it with the 9+ price increases.

Yeah I'm not holding my breath on this having a big backlash at all. I think a lot of people underestimate how ingrained Netflix is for a lot of people out there.

People may whine about shows being cancelled but no other service matches their variety of constant new content.

You can bitch and complain all you want, but people will fall in line. They will get another account and Netflix will show that it works. They will then raise their prices again where people will bitch but still subscribe.

Other streamers will follow suit and then boom, we are even more poor now.
Exactly.

People mad because they can't use their ex from 3 relationships ago's Netflix account lol.

Similar. Except the code only works for a week. And once every 31 days, the person would need to reconnect with wherever the primary home is...

I mean the idea here is to force account moochers to get their own subscription, and I'm skeptical this will get Netflix anything substantial. (But I guess to a capitalist culture of infinite growth, it doesn't matter so long as the net gain is above 0 lol)

I think of it in terms of piracy. When TheHyliaAnime shut down I don't think there was a mass rush of former users buying dvd sets of the shows they no longer had access to or signing up for Crunchyroll. Unless moochers are really invested in what Netflix is offering they may just adapt to not having it anymore.

Now granted I'm sure there will be enough new subs that it won't be a totally wasted effort, but at this point Netflix is trying to squeeze blood from a stone. They should be looking into other ways to make revenue besides streaming subscriptions, if they haven't already lol.

What happened to the plan of being able to add another household for people that dont live together?

Maybe they gave up on that Or maybe they are trying to find a way to work it in with this new rule

Apparently, if this doesn't work, they'll go to "harsher methods", which means charging the extra $3... So, that's where that plan went, according to the article...

This is gutter trash and is going to create a mass exodus back to piracy. Netflix was only worth it for me because I could share it with my family elsewhere. I almost never actually watch it.

No it won't. Most people weren't savvy enough to pirate even back when it was "big" and probably even less so now since they're so used to streaming.

I'd argue that the balkanization and flighty nature of content on streaming is making it worse.
  • Episodes of Bluey mysteriously missing? - about thirty seconds in google gets you to a pirate site with those episodes, and the back half of season 3!
  • Tonight's hockey game not on ESPN+? - well looky there, it's a pirate site that has it.
  • The last season of Thunderbirds are Go not on Prime for some reason? - that same site that had Bluey also has that.
  • Taxi disappeared from Hulu? - oh look, that was easy to find.
and so on and so on...

For me I think this may eventually kill Netflix. Sure its got big tent pole releases like Stranger Things and Wednesday. But those shows are usually 2 years between seasons.

The much bigger draw for streaming is comfort back catalogue shows like The office. And Netflix is losing those to other streamers. This feels like a desperate grab to get more income thats likely to backfire.

And thats another thing. A lot of older people have these setup by their family. Not sure if Netflix thought this out well. Theyre going to more than likely just lose 99% of them anyway.

This is the perfect opportunity for any other streaming service to step in and just announce they wont do this

Other companies SHOULD do that but I feel like its going to be the reverse. Theyre going to see that Netflix got away with it and be like hey if Netflix can do it, so can we!

Seriously. I couldn't just up and leave once a month to get back on my home network. Not to mention, lots of guys that deploy don't even have a home network. It's really, really common for single service members to cut all at-home spending when they deploy to earn maximum income, including internet and the actual home they were living in. Orders are a get out of lease free card, lots of our deployed guys are literally homeless when they get back in order to save money.
