The setting, the horror aspect, the infections, the actual gameplay and battle mechanics are all beneath the plot and especially the characters. But we all know this already right?

I can agree to that but I'd also say it was generic and not memorable and not what would bring me back to play it.

I dunno I liked the brutality of it, especially the second one which has much better gameplay (and worse story). Going prone was a nice addition as was the grass and unique encounters, some of those larger areas were just fantastic to sneak around killing and setting up traps.

I wouldn't say they're beneath the plot, because they're all used for the express purpose of getting over the plot. Everything is designed to enhance the plot.

That's the main strength of TLOU. That the entirety of the game is so tightly designed around telling a specific story and because of that it tells the story really really well.

But that's not to say the gameplay or setting or whatever don't matter. If this was basically a point and click puzzle/adventure game like, say, the Telltale games, TLOU wouldn't be remotely close to as good, even if the story could be just as good.

Playing that game on hard and grounded mode legitimate is a phenomenal experience.

Similar to the original god of war games and Uncharted it changes everything.

I would think there's no game mechanics if I played on easy as well

I am going to give a 2nd chance to the game soon. I heard so much people saying it was one of the best games of all time and I kinda disagreed. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood

This is true, too, though Grounded is absurdly and stupidly difficult. I thought Survivor difficulty was PERFECT. And disable listen mode, too, that enhances it even more.

Having to play a game on the most difficulty(sometimes needed to be unlocked by beating the game on normal) to get the best gameplay experience is a bad game design. The game was made for its story and characters. Everything else is secondary.

I think its one of those rare games where the gameplay and narrative match up perfectly.

On their own merits the story and atmosphere are great. The gameplay is good as well. Together they are amazing.

there is plenty of environmental storytelling, journals/notes, and stuff like that.

the brutality of the gameplay relays both how violent the world is, and the scavenging to show it's a dying world (as far as humans go), that the player has to rely on things made in the past to survive.

people have argued that the infection is a metaphor for Joel's loss of humanity.

so, everything that you experience is meant to add to the world, feeling, experience of TLoU, and not as some secondary thing that has a minor purpose.

No offense but I disagree and that sounds like some reaching bullshit. If you're saying everything is made to and for the benefit of the story then everything is secondary.

Playing games on hard is how I always play them, and while Grounded might have been DLC, the higher difficulty and lack of listening mode causes the player to actually ENGAGE with the game, which can't really be said for the earlier difficulties. Most games it is just "enemies do more damage / have more health" but in this case, it just evens the playing field. You die in one or two hits, but so do they, and with more scarce resources it really causes the player to use everything they have and to be methodical and careful. It really elevates the game, and it's a shame if people don't try it at least once.

I play Ghost of Tsushima on Lethal / Hard and the extra one hit / two hit kills on both my end and the enemies cause me to play more precisely and use everything I can at my disposal. It's fantastic, and same with TLOU.

I plan on signing up for HBO once the season finishes. Because while I loved the story of the game, I absolutely hated the gameplay and that killed all motivation to ever play through the game again after the first time.

And before people jump down my throat. I'm not saying the gameplay is bad, just that it wasn't enjoyable to me, personally. I didn't like the forced scarcity of resources, that's just not my type of play style

I get where you are coming from. I love horror games but much prefer to watch lets plays than play myself as I just dont enjoy the gameplay.

I hate to say this to defend the game but this is an illusion on the game's part. They say you have to play smart and use your weapons and ammo wisely because items are rare but the truth is after you get done using your resources on a group of hostiles they'll always drop enough stuff to replenish you and that's not including the items in the area. However this style of game play is true for Grounded.
