My mom is one of those people. She joined the HOA board in her neighborhood and doesn't want to go Ted Cruz on them by coming to stay at my house. She says she's fine, but this is nuts.

I think they got ice. You see, being in Texas means that this hardly happens and there is no need to upgrade their infrastructure. This hasn't happened really ever and probably definitely won't happen again in the next two years. Nope.

Yeah, as much as I'd love to shit on Texas for being Texas, that kind of ice storm will fuck up your power lines no matter where you live. Last time we had that kind of ice in Ohio, our power was out for over a week.

I've lived in Austin since I think 97 and we thankfully didn't lose power this time like during the winter shitstorm 2 years ago. Sucks for all the customers that have been in the dark this week. I never would've thought Austin Power would be the one to not winterize their shit while Ercot or whatever was okay this time.

It hardly ever gets cold here for reference, and I have joked about how snow itself is a fictional thing you only seen in movies because of how rare freezing temperatures and snow is here. Because it never gets cold here no one has any experience driving on ice which leads to some of these accidents you might have heard off the news. Wednes/Thursday morning I just kept hearing loud noises which I'm sure was all the trees I now see littered across the neighborhood. Thankfully we had ours trimmed before it was ever a problem.

We didn't lose power, but this is the biggest limb that fell in our yard.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/2/3/0/AABT3YAAEJ7O.jpg

My girlfriend asked if it was something we could together when I told her I wasn't touching it and I just laughed at her. There's lots of smaller ones I already broke down and moved out front for pickup but this one is the landlords problem.

Honestly our grid fucking sucks but that didn't matter here, we have tons of power lines down all over town. Lots of the streetlights are still off too.

You need to think about both geography and climate when thinking about why we don't have crews readily available to handle this at the drop of a hat. Where you're from, the conditions exist in which it's expected that storms and other things of that nature will often occur. In central texas, these conditions rarely occur. I mean rarely. That's likely to change moving to change moving forward, but this is the case for our current situation.

It's not a "Texan" thing either. I'm from coastal Texas originally where hurricanes and tropical storms regularly whip through and wreck us, and because those conditions are normal there we'd get our power back pretty quick after the storm rolled through. The worst weather we historically get here in Central Texas though is that it's too hot. You might as well ask why we don't have salt trucks for the roads.

That sounds like yet another political issue. Maybe if Republicans in Texas didn't spend so much of their energy denying climate change then they'd be a little more prepared to address these trends and anticipate it getting cold in the winter.
