I feel like there was a time in the past when people would try to convince people to reconsider their worldview with compassionate and empathetic approaches to controversial subjects.

Id disagree with the idea of them being caricatures. Their appearance is fairly typical for fantasy works and some of their traits are the result of merging dwarven and goblin folklore.
