Because with the more 'pre stampede' hairstyle, and all the death and dismemberment, and glasses that are too large, it seems like it's a much younger much less skilled vash. People didn't die around vash because he was ridiculously, impossibly skilled, always detaining with trick shots or other shenanigans at the expense of himself, while making it look like accidents or coincidences. Once he messed up and got a bad guy good in the guts and was extremely upset with himself. Having body parts explode out of a doorway like that....
