Russia could launch a major offensive as early as next Wednesday as the Kremlin is pouring reinforcements towards the frontline, a senior Ukrainian leader has warned. Serhiy Haidai, the Governor of Luhansk, said Moscow is beginning to save artillery ammunition, getting ready for a full-scale offensive.

The Ukrainian military said 1,030 Russians died yesterday, the highest daily toll of the war so far, as Moscow throws thousands into battle.

The Kremlin wants to achieve a breakthrough before Western battle tanks arrive in Ukraine.
And the Ministry of Defence has warned Russian commanders are attempting to use undermanned, inexperienced units to meet unrealistic objectives as political pressure intensifies.

Intelligence chiefs believe Moscow does not have enough ammunition to successfully launch a major offensive.

Russian forces are only moving forward several hundred metres every week, with the capture of Donetsk Oblast believed to be the key goal.

They are throwing thousands of troops into what Defence Secretary Ben Wallace describes as the meatgrinder of Ukrainian machine-gun fire.

Mr Haidai warned more and more reserves are being deployed towards the frontline.

He said: "We are seeing more and more [Russian] reserves being deployed in our direction, we are seeing more equipment being brought in," said Serhiy Haidai, the Ukrainian governor of Luhansk.

"They bring ammunition that is used differently than before - it is not round-the-clock shelling anymore. They are slowly starting to save, getting ready for a full-scale offensive," Haidai told Ukrainian television.

"It will most likely take them 10 days to gather reserves. After Feb. 15 we can expect [this offensive] at any time."

It comes as the deputy commander of UK forces in Estonia, Major Nick Bridges, said Challenger 2s will make short work of an infantry company.

Ukrainian officials say they expect the new drive to come in eastern and southern Ukraine, as the Kremlin strives to secure areas it has illegally annexed and where it claims its rule is welcomed.

Battlefield setbacks have embarrassed the Kremlin, and Russian President Vladimir Putin is keen to cement public support for the war. Ensuring Kremlin rule in the eastern Donbas industrial region, bordering Russia, is expected to be a key objective.

Major Nick Bridges, deputy commander of the UK forces on the 1,500-man, 500-vehicle exercise, has drawn lessons from the Estonia exercise for the Ukrainians. Their biggest challenge will be communications between the Leopard and Challenger tanks, he says.
Major Bridges said the Challenger 2 tanks have heavier armour, but Leopards are faster and lighter.

He added: Both can do gunfights at night and theyve got hunter-killer capabilities as well. So, they can engage a target while looking for the next target.

Major Bridges dismissed the demise of the tank, he says, but said Ukrainians could use them to devastating effect.

They are not there to take on other tanks, but to destroy other vehicles, he explains. Theyll make short work of an infantry company or vehicle convoy, he adds.

Ukrainian troops have arrived in the UK to begin training on how to use the AS-90 artillery guns. Britain is donating 30 to give Kyivs forces more firepower.

Average life expectancy on the frontine of Eastern Ukraine is 4 hours.

Russia is literally throwing thousands of people into the line of machine gun fire just to gain a few hundred meters in an attempt to push before Ukraine gets European tanks.

The paralells to WW1 are uncanny.

It's like they literally went "Hey technically Field Marshal Haig won right? Therefore his tactics were brilliant!"

I'd like to think both Ukraine and Russia are smart enough not to broadcast what their strategy and troop movements are

But who knows at this point

Same thing they did before likely. Absorb it, fall back where they have to using flexible defensive strategies while trying to inflict as many casualties on the Russians as possible. Then if possible counterattack the exhausted Russians.

It's hard at this point to not know what your opponenet is up to. Satellites, drone footage, and everyone on the planet having a cellphone that they can take videos and photos with makes it hard to conceal large concentrations of men and equipment. Though the Russians used to be good at doing so back in WW2, it's like they gave up and quit trying.

You say that the Tanks are literally not in Ukraine yet

No way for Russia to know what Ukraine is going to do with them (beyond tactical guess work) based on drones.

Equally Ukraine has known Russia was planning this new offensive since at least Christmas.

but they still don't know who what when and how they will be deployed

Sure. But think about the buildup to the war as an example. There were literally hundreds of videos of Russian troop and equipment movements being transported by rail and road. They weren't in Ukraine yet then either. Using that information though allowed the Ukrainian military to at least understand where the Russians were massing and plan accordingly. This is likely to play out very similarly.

When it comes to mechanized warfare in a place like Ukraine there are only so many routes that can sustain a prolonged advance. Similarly there are only so many routes you can use to move defensive units to the front. Especially in the spring and fall when essentially everything not concrete or asphalt is mud. Which allows the defender a massive advantage if they know where the enemy concentrations are. It doesn't matter how many battalion tactical groups you are deploying in an area if there are only 3 or 4 routes they can actually use for your axis of advance.

Which is honestly why the Russians initially advanced on three fronts. Problem is that they blew their numerical advantage by doing dumbass thunder runs with individual or limited numbers of armored vehicles down routes with prepared defenses and then had to entirely withdraw from the northern front.

^ Well I mean if the frontlines are so deadly that men are being mowed down by machine gun fire in the hundreds, how do you even recover the bodies?

I don't see Ukrainians being "respectful" to the dead and letting the Russians do it like the British and Germans did in France.

Hard to be "Respectful" when your nation is being invaded.

Rememeber how astounding it was that Russia had lost more men in 6 months in Ukraine than USA lost in all the years of Vietnam?
Now Russia's lost more men in Ukraine than USA did in WWI.
Oh by the way, USA lost a little under 500,000 men fighting the Axis both in the Pacific and European theaters over the course of circa four years.
Russia's losses follow a surprisingly similar trajectory, but on a frontline a few hundred miles long. I don't know what to call that. Pathetic?
