NES had a lot of classics like Super Mario 3, Double Dragon 2, Castlevania III, etc.

N64 had a lot of good multi-player games that me and friends spent hours playing like WCW vs nWo, Wave Race 64, Mario Kart 64, Goldeneye 64

I'm going with the... 64.

I think the 3d platformers help the N64's argument.

N64 was such a blast at a sleepover as a kid.

4 controllers.. Smash, Mario Kart, Mario Party..

Just for that alone it wins.

N64. It was definitely a case of quality vs. quantity as while the NES has far more games, it also had an ocean of absolute guttershit. Also, N64 games were generally better-made and had better QoL improvements. I can easily go back to playing N64 games, but in most cases, I cannot go back to NES (also, I started with SNES, so...).

The NES for yeas when it was out it could not be touched. Besides Zelda and Starfox I don't know many games that what must have for the N64 if you had something else . When you had the PSX right there, better in every way but loading times.

Literally Super Mario Bros 3, Tecmo Super Bowl, Legend of Zelda, SMB2 (Doki Doki Panic), Contra, Super C, Lifeforce, Any Shoot em up, DuckTales, Batman, Countless upon countless others...

N64 games always have a wonky camera that was part of the awkward teenage phase of gaming. Like, c'mon. Wind Waker VS OoT? The Camera system in WW is far superior and makes it hard to go back to. Goldeneye? LOL Mario 64? Already been perfected with future titles.

2D has aged better than the most awkward phase of 3D.

Yes, 2D as a whole has aged better than those early sluggish 3D games, but the NES isn't a good example since a lot of the games on NES were completely broken. All Nintendo-made games were good, and there were a handful of publishers who made great games, but the rest were very poor quality. Also, the difficulty of many of them were absurd.

Although the mediocre SNES games were better quality than either of them.

Agreed.

By the time the N64 came along, I was 18 years old, had already moved on to the PS, and was "above" cartridge gaming.

Difficulty was absurd because a lot of early NES games were arcade ports that weren't made to be "beaten".

They where made to be beaten. They just where made to eat as many of your quarters as possible in the process but then the ports took away that technical infinite lives (as long as you had quarters) which made it harder

NES had at least 10x the amount of great games N64 had.

The way people ITT talk about NES, you'd wonder how Nintendo became a household name thanks to it. You'd never know it had multiple great games from the following franchises: Mario, Zelda, Castlevania, Ninja Gaiden, Mega Man, Contra, Dragon Quest/Warrior, Double Dragon, TMNT, Disney, Batman, etc. These aren't "arcade ports". These games aren't "broken quarter munchers". Again, these franchises don't just have one great game on the NES, they have multiple. And we're not even getting into all the one-offs on NES, like Punch-Out.

Correct.

I didn't mean in the sense that there was no ending to the games, just that the games were incredibly long and repetitive, because they were arcade ports. So the goal was more to get the high score as opposed to beating the game.

But going back to the age/nostalgia thing, I was just never nostalgic for the N64 because I never owned my own system. My cousin had one, and I only really played Mario Kart and Golden Eye on it, and the later on, Paper Mario.

My console purchases went from NES > Genesis > PS 1, 2, 3, 4.

SNES, definitely, but NES still had a lot of growing pains that make it hard for me to go back to.

Even Super Mario Bros. 3 had a better version of it on the SNES via Super Mario All-Stars.

That said if i play the original Mario I want the nes version. Nostalgia is a helluva drug.

Oddly I would prefer the updated Mario 3. Guess it boils down to Mario 1 was my first game

The NES had more classics. On the whole, the N64 was rather clunky. Nintendo had some in-house winners such as Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time. Third-party developers, with the exceptions of Rare and THQ, struggled to get the best out of the console.

I still play N64, but it's usually Mario or wrestling. There's a short list of games for the console that I still play to this day.

There was few non big title games that I thought where fun. Bio freaks battle tanks and a mortal combat rip off called war gods.

I also remember enjoying a racing game that was all Volkswagen bettles. And I don't even like racing games

While I grew up with the new and never truly had a n64 for myself. It was at my grandma's house for us kids. The N64 is one of the best systems. Being able to play with four people and all of the fun games on it, made it the better system to me. While I do like smb3 I feel sm64 was better. Smash bros and Mario kart 64 were better then any nes game, not including Diddy Kong racing. Then you have some of the best shooters ever in goldeneye and perfect dark. OoT I feel is better the the og legend of Zelda, though link to the past will always be the goat to me. I feel the N64 is just the superior console.

To each his own, but I can't believe it is so close.

I am someone who hates the NES graphics. In so many games there is and overabundance of this brunt brown red color for example, mega men only got good (to me) with X. And even with that said. NES was the best that gen had. If you didn't have that you didn't have shit. In you didn't have N64 you missed out on Star Fox and Zelda. Like I am not saying people or wrong, just that I don't get it.
