I have no delusions that Miyazaki is writing down notes and considering calling me up to consult on the next Soulsborne. It's a criticism. I'm full of opinions for all games and I think "intentional design" is a cop-out argument when any type of game fails at QoL.

I thought Souls were one of the few games that didn't railroad you into doing things, but now we have to play it right and everything is perfectly designed and above reproach. Either you miss stuff and don't finish quests, or you decide part of the fun of Fromsoft RPGs are talking to people on game forums and looking up shit on Wikis. That's how I remember even playing Demon's Souls on PS3.

Never played the game, fucking love this topic.

I dunno if I'd want a full on quest log, but it would be nice if it was more clear where an NPC was going to go next.

No. And I wasn't necessarily talking to just you, which I guess is confusing by me quoting your post. My intention is not to saying liking the game's quest design is objectively wrong.

But "you don't need to do everything" seems like a poor excuse for "there's no indication on how to continue the thing you're doing". Of course I want to finish a thing I've started. I understand missing things completely or stumbling into quest starts. Hopefully stumbling into quest continuation via backtracking is slightly more frustrating.

Man if you're complaining about lack of handholding in a Souls you are objectively in the wrong. Explore or use a guide.

There are a few questlines that will lock you out of trophies/achievements if you miss them.
One quest line causes you to miss 3+ bosses, at least one zone, the best spirit ash in the game, and a full ending.

there is no "full ending". You can literally start the game do no side quests and still finish it.

So the side quests don't really matter all that much.

Agree 100%. You are absolutely spot on Tc. There is a difference between an open world game where you mark a waypoint, fast travel there, complete task, open map, find next quest/event icon, fast travel, complete, rinse/repeat, versus just having a simple QOL menu button like a fucking compendium containing easy access to all the little scraps and shit you pick up or identify over time.

If it's something you can notebook yourself IRL with a pen and paper, there's zero excuse for not also including something like that in the game.

What's dumb is people still complaining a game was made the way developers wanted and not tailored to their needs. The people that need hand holding throughout the game are going to be constantly looking at a wiki page anyway so whining about it is just noise.

The weaker version of the quest log is not going to help you solve some of these obtuse ass quests, so complaining you will miss something is so beyond the pale

So my point still stands. The side quests don't matter you still beat the game and theres no "full ending"

Getting 100%, getting frenzied flame, cursed, dusk, or stars ending, finishing it at lvl 4, beating every boss, talking to every NPC, etc wont give you a full ending.

If you can do none of those things above and still finish the game, THEN NONE OF THE SIDE QUEST MATTER

Doing any of the optional side stuff doesnt make the ending less valid than someone who didnt..

If you want to put more time into a game then do you but your ending is the same as someone who didnt.

You can do all the extra shit in the world to get Ranni's ending but you got to the same point as the person that did the minimum.

How many times should I go back and fully explore the same area? And I better do it before I walk too far or fight too much because otherwise, bye bye entire questline I was in the middle of. Other Souls games don't have the issue Elden Ring has.
