Half the posts in this thread are condemning either Biden or Trump for creating unsafe working conditions and for siding with the Rail companies rather than supporting the strike to improve conditions.

Do we know how the train derailed yet? What if something was on the tracks? What if it was a fluke or freak accident that couldn't be prevented? It would have nothing to do with politics in that case.

We do.
We know the safety was rushed due to worker shortage.

We know they used old tech to save money when the new tech would have greatly help prevent.

The decision to strike or not strike would not have impacted this happening pretty much at all and is a separate issue entirely. Literally no idea why we're discussing it in context of an ecological disaster.

rushed overworked understaffed workers such as safety inspectors did not contribute to this is your take?

Thanks. I'm trying to catch up since I don't live in the area and it's not being talked about at all in the national news, like we've been saying.

No, my point is a strike would not have changed legislation in this time frame. I would expect it to still be ongoing at this point, probably, with scabs working the trains. We've seen what "self regulation" means like in this industry.

Two more trains apparently derailed earlier today, one in Texas due to a tractor trailer pulling in front of it as it came through the crossing, and the other in North Carolina thats still being investigated as to how it exactly came off the tracks, though thankfully neither of those derailments were anywhere near as bad as this one.

I dunno if its just sheer coincidence given were sitting up and actually paying attention to this ongoing environmental disaster, but its clear to me at least that the good old days of not expecting your town to become the next Flint County up in Michigan or that one Canadian town someone mentioned earlier in the topic simply due to corporate greed dictating that profits be given a higher priority than safety are about to come to a screeching halt now that theres a damned mushroom cloud hanging over a small town in Ohio, just sayin.

For how long? How long do you think railway companies would wait before bringing in untrained scabs to do skilled labor? An hour? Two? Maybe a whole day before the National Guard shows up to force their way into the work site if strikers are keeping workers from getting in?

Strikes take time and corporations have learned all sorts of methods for dealing with them over the years. It doesn't help that the government is typically on their side since it cares more about maintaining the status quo than promoting the best interests of citizens.

Which means every train stops at exactly 69 extra-nasty cars now.

In the end, the gigantic lawsuits that will soon follow, will force the issue far more effectively than loophole-ridden legislation.

Ah yes because people should have to go through the trouble of having to scramble to puts tens of thousands of dollars together to get legal representation when something goes wrong. Then hope it gets heard in a reasonable time. Excellent.

Oh don't forget if it happened in a Right to Work state. Expedited scabs.

EDIT: Okay, maybe that's not what right to work laws are about. It's just about Union dues.

this really does deserve to be blamed on Biden, hope he doesnt run again

How exactly is this Biden's fault?

The railroad labor dispute was a single-issue dispute over paid sick leave. Even still, 8 out of the 12 major railroad unions had already voted to approve and ratify the new collective bargaining agreement. 4 other unions held out specifically for paid sick leave, which is an issue that is still being negotiated and have successfully gotten the Major US Rail Company CSX reaching a deal with 2 unions so far for paid sick leave. I know it's hard to be informed on every developing issue, but it wouldn't hurt to make sure you understand what you're talking about. Or you could just be lazy and immediately say "Hey a train crashed with deadly chemicals, and I kind of remember a thing Biden was doing something with the Railroad unions not striking or something so it's totally his fault!"

This is the result of short staffing. This is the result of abusive work conditions. This is the result of treating workers like common hand tools. This is the result of telling your workers that they may only get sick once per year and theyd better get over it in 24 hours. This is the result of corporate greed at its absolute worst and this is what we should expect to see more of until our politicians stop stuffing their pockets and start working for the people.

Phosphine is also used in the manufacture of plastics apparently, just putting that out there in case any conspiracy theorists decide to claim this was intentionally done for some strange reason.
