Luminaire is explicitly called a holy attack in the japanese descriptive text of CT. We can argue that Cloud resists this particular holy attack due to the bad snes translation of CT's elements but...

Sahelanthropus can win this solo.

I checked the vids and I think the dungeon will hold. This means Sahelanthropus is landlocked but otherwise good to go, and unfortunately it counters Aigis so hard there's no way she wins here. Even arguing that Crono is an overall stronger swordsman while fighting like Tusk and Cloud is dead, the matchup is so terrible they can't win. Props to JC tho, I had to think a long time about this one. If his reinforcements from this week were here, he easily takes it.

I'm pretty sure Chrono Trigger characters just don't cross elements (aside from great mage Magus and Robo, neither of which get taught magic spells from Spekkio) is the thing

Like literally the lore behind them getting their abilities is it's tied to an element

If I were Crono, Id simply use facts and logic in my dual tech to out-argue the opponent

Every other instance of 'light' spells are clearly lightning. Whether it's Crono or Magus's lightning spells, or Robo's Shock tech. And Luminaire hits the same elemental resistance as those (just try using on the Magus refight when he's weak to lightning), so I don't see why it isn't lightning.

Robo's shock tech should be all you need if the other spells being literally called Lightning isn't enough for you. The enemies weak/resistant to it profile more as it being lightning too.

It's probably called heaven because the lightning strikes from the sky. Not because it's literally holy energy.

electricity is not the inverse of shadow unfortunately

but in context, almost every Light/Lightning based attack is electricity-based
Electrocute, Thunder Chomp, Megavolt, Lightning Rod - in the world of Chrono Trigger, there's no difference between "light" and "electricity" damage.

I'm a little tired today so I'm gonna put it this way: Even if Sahalanthropus can't get downstairs, it can still release rust and Vivi can aeroga that rust throughout the temple and then Aigis does her best impression of the baddie from Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Honestly I think crono's sword and the buster sword go with it but then you have a weaponless Crono trying to tusk-the-barbarian into sahalanthropus and vivi, at worst.

Cloud dying or not is irrelevant and Sahalanthropus getting downstairs is also irrelevant.

Even if my ranged death scenario doesn't work, I still think it's very hard to buy Aigis and Crono taking on Vivi and Sahalanthropus (even in a low ceiling temple, without Cloud) so I'm gonna call it here.

I guess it matters whether you take the limitations of the game or the intentions of the creators more seriously.

The fact when they had better tech and options they even more clearly made Luminaire holy (white) seals it for me.

It's not hard to put a holy element and a lightning element in the game if you want to.

Literally every FF game on the SNES did. I don't get the "hardware limitation" argument.

I mean, I think it's irrelevant to the argument here because I think Cloud tanks and heals out anyway. But for further arguments you'll never convince me it's anything but holy.

Yeah, he doesn't die, at least not until he and Aigis duel. The 3-on-2 nature of this (Tingle would be a non-factor even if he didn't die immediately), and Crono thinking he's immortal and running into battle thinking he can't die isn't gonna go well. That makes it functionally Aigis, an android, versus three very powerful characters. Yeah, no, not happening. She takes Cloud down but he tires her out enough that Vivi and Liquid get the better of him.

If there wasn't any funny business, I think this would be a close match. JC's good at arguing his case though!

Team Vivi

Yeah I just don't see it. Even in the best-case scenario where Metal Gear trips on a hole and falls directly into the lava AND Cloud is dead, it's gonna take a while to properly go down and Aigis is in a very bad place anywhere around it. This lets Vivi, who passively reflects magic which is probably gonna be Aigis' go-to instead of shooting the incredibly durable robot, kinda just sit there and weakness snipe at Aigis while Salmisanthropeus or whatever passively creates covering fire as it slowly melts to death. And then Crono probably thinks he's gonna survive charging through the lava to beat a dude up and... doesn't. He very much does not.

I also thought the lava was on the floor above originally, and that hurt Metal Gear a lot more.

I don't think Cloud dies but I barely think it matters anyway, as the metal gear hard counters Aigis and Crono isn't acting as his ideal self.
