Neither me or my partner ever get a break from our kids and we are never usually this irritable or easily angered with things our kids do

My mother in law said we both need therapy but all I think we need is more breaks from the kids to not be cranky, angry, or mad all the time. I researched what our problem is and apparently it's called parental burnout

But my mother in law doesn't believe something like this exists and that we just need to fix our attitudes and we don't need a break

Not to my mother in law. She says it doesn't exist at all and that we need psychiatric help.

I mean anyone who doesn't believe your experience is real is a bit of an asshole and quite self centered. She probably just can't understand anyone's POV but her own.

It absolutely is a thing. Me and my wife are in a similar situation where even the little things will trigger us and anger us. We even feel bad that we are emotionally distant from them at times but thats mainly due to how tired we always are.

We need more breaks badly but we dont have anyone else to watch our kids but her parents and they rarely are willing to watch the kids outside of times we have to work.

If we had more breaks, I promise you that we would be better parents. We have chronic fatigue all the time since our entire life is work and kids.

Probably would benefit from a weekly dedicated date night. Or even a day where one of you takes care of them and the other fucks off and does a hobby.

I'm not a parent but even I know that's a thing. That's why there's babysitters and sleepovers at the grandparents/cousins. Anybody who tells you otherwise is lyin', never really been good parents, is a stay-at-home parent, or never had kids.

We are trying to work this out. It's a great idea. I just have the hope the wife agrees too.

if my pets irate me at times I can only imagine the drain a child brings from time to time.

Of course it's a real thing, but it really comes down to other factors on top of just raising kids. Most parents also work full time jobs on top of raising kids, so the burnout comes from doing too much at once rather than just from kids. People without kids come home from work and can relax or do absolutely nothing on their days off. Parents don't have that luxury unless they're leaving their kids with a babysitter/family member or just stick them in front of the TV/other devices all day.

My best friend and her husband have an agreement where every Friday night they take turns staying home with the kids, while the other goes out with friends and unwinds. They said it made a huge difference having that one night every other week.

This. The human race should just die out since the large majority of the time you can't actually know if you're ready for kids until you have. Only psychics who can see the future and use that hindsight to see if having kids is really what they thought it would be can have kids. Problem solved

there's burnout for absolutely everything in this world. we're human. we get tired of shit.

yes this is a reason a lot don't want to, and don't have kids. they know this will happen.

but it's not going to fix itself. either find ways to deal with it, by getting time away from your kids, or with methods that a specialist has been taught to guide people through.

This is a decent point actually. Parents had time to breath because kids would be outside all day. As long as I stayed in the neighborhood, I could be outside all day if I wanted.

The kids go to bed at 9pm. We have to go sleep right after. Definitely no down time there.

Yeah, you are only human, and your mother in law comes from a generation where the resolution to mental problems is "Just cheer up!" So I wouldn't put much stock into what she says.

I imagine my mom got permanently burned out at some point. I mean that has to be why she did stuff like like stop taking us to see our dad's side of the family even though it would have been extremely beneficial for us.

^Me time has been VERY lacking since the kids were born. We never had any for 6 years now and we are irritable as hell because of it.

Our problem is we have no one else to watch the kids but the wife's parents and they never want to watch them outside of us working.

It's an absolute real thing but freedom is one thing you give up when having kids. I only have one girl and she's very high maintenance. What we would do is pay our parents (from either side) to watch over her for one day and provide them with all the necessary stuff to help her while we would go out and do whatever on that day at least once a month. It gives us breathing room to go through it.
