Here's the card for tonight. Sadly, I have a massive headache right now, so I might not be around to discuss the episode as it airs unless the Ibuprofen kicks in hard enough. As a reminder, please put any discussion of match results under spoiler tags until 24 hours after the episode airs out of consideration for people who can't watch the episode live, especially if you decide to watch the episode early on Discovery+ before it airs on TV. Showtime is an hour and a half away, so here's hoping I feel better by then. If not, enjoy the episode without me.

This is one of those fight cards where it just feels like most the fights will be one-sided. Evidenced by 5 of the 15 people in my Battlebots pick'em league having identical picks. Those 5 are also the top 5 people.

The only question mark one I have is Ominous vs Shreddit Bro and that's more which of these incredibly mediocre bots will actually work, rather than expecting a good, close fight.

Yeah, it's gonna be ugly. Though I really wish Riptide would get its shit kicked in. Its the only team I straight up dislike. They play the heel but without any of the self-awareness that Tombstone or Hydra have so they just come off unlikable. Factor in that the bot is funded by autism "cures" and its just a bad recipe for likability.

Kinda of a lower-octane episode than we've seen recently, with some pretty easy walk-away matchups like Deathroll vs. Mammoth and Riptide vs. Shrederator. Ominous vs Shreddit Bro was pretty lousy, but it was hilarious that they did a mid-fight ad for the next fight to distract us lmao.

Glad to see that the brothers are reunited on the Whiplash team, I think there was some significant trouble in the pits without his help the past few fights. Whiplash worked pretty well in this one, and it was a pretty tough fight. Monsoon looked pretty strong, but good driving kept a kill shot from happening.

I'm a fan of Whiplash, but their poor performance recently has been disappointing. Hopefully they can bring it together for the tournament (assuming they actually make it)

Also gonna join the group of people saying that Riptide went a little too far fucking up Shrederator. Between the main kid's arrogance and loud mouth, the fact that the bot design is apparently stolen from a lower weight division, and the fact that he utterly annihilated Shrederator well after it would have been prudent to wait and see...I really dislike Riptide's team. Great bot, but terrible sportsmanship.

Yeah I'm definitely gonna be rooting for Black Dragon in their next match, Riptide's a really good bot but that Ethan guy sounds like a complete and utter tool from what the other teams are saying on reddit. Hope Black Dragon shows them the same courtesy they showed Captain Shredderator, otherwise they'll just keep being total assholes whenever they win.

The Riptide fight has all sorts of controversy behind it. Other builders are shitting on the team. Apparently Riptide seriously pissed off the production teams. And the refs had to literally pull the controller out of Ethan's hands after he continually ignored the refs warnings to stop. Apparently they are just despised by everyone else there.

I read before going into this there would be a moment... but not sure what exactly.

Either way what Riptide did was uncalled for, and from what I've read it came out to about 10k dollars worth of unneccesary damage which really helps put it into perspective. I know there was an unwritten rule about sportsmanship that not everyone has to follow, and if this was a one time deal I could probably understand, but it's just another in a line of questionable/asshole behavior. I too hope they get karma in some form.

It wasn't even that they broke the unwritten rule. They were actively ignoring Shred yielding and the refs telling them to stop to the point that the refs actually pulled the controller out of Ethan's hands. It started to create an actual confrontation and you can see the tail end of it when the camera starts to focus on the team after the fight and you see Ethan finally throw up his hands in surrender. The fact that this is hardly their first example of incredibly unsportsmanlike behavior kinda removes any benefit of the doubt they might otherwise receive. And they have successfully turned the entire Battlebots community against them. I really home Black Dragon thoroughly kicks their shit in. Like a complete totalling of the bot and that they get entirely shunned by everyone in the pits.

Oh no, I fully understood what they did. I was just tossing in that I was aware of the fact there's an unwritten rule to not grind an already defenseless/defeated bot into a pulp because it costs time/money for no reason. He even said at the start all he had to do was get one big hit to flip him and he'd win, which he did, then proceeded to absolutely demolish CS all while being told to stop until eventually forced. Then ofcourse the best part is at the end he said he didn't know what to do because Shreddator just kept moving and attacking him, so he just kept hitting him. Yeah, CS does a lot of inverted driving while sitting like a turtle on its back.
I'm just adding it onto their list of already questionable behavior such as sticking their hand on Martin Mason's mouth during the post fight interview, along with the others. Without listing off every single one, because who knows how long that list will eventually be.

I don't think Ray's ever even actually tried to be a villain. People like to point at that single fight fight where says "you want more?!" before going in for a hit, but I've always been 99% sure what he meant was "we both know you've lost, but can I hit you one last time for the cameras?". They just like giving him a very weird edit.

let me make a confession.

i am the casual eyeballs the show is working to capture. i had some vague ideas about how the behind the scenes operation worked, but i figured that was all part of the show, that battlebots bankrolled anyone who could demonstrate some sort of minimal competency. The destruction of capt shred was visually stunning, and fully what the show seems to want to present. so while i expected the extra hits to lead to a show feud, i didn't expect it to lead to a complaint about how much money the destruction was costing.

so is the 10k coming out of this guy's pocket or what? I guess what i am asking is, how do these guys make money? auto racing uses sponsors, and we see what the race cars look like - these robots are nothing of the sort. if sponsors are the answer, how do they gain their exposure? i mean, i barely follow auto racing, and i still know who the major sponsors are, and whose outfits they sponsor.

The long and short of it is they really don't make money. They do it because it's their hobby. If they are lucky sponsorships help them break even. So yeah, those repairs are coming out of pocket. Obviously they damage and destruction is part of the game. And nobody is afraid of taking big hits as part of the fight. But everyone in the pits knows how much hard work and money goes into the bots so they all do what they can do avoid unnecessary hits. Which is why fucking up and entirely incapacitated bot is such and incredible dick move. If CS took that damage because that's what was needed to beat them, nobody would he complaining. The fact that all that damage came after Shred was knocked out, is what makes it heinous. It'd be like a boxer landing a knock out punch and then preceding to beat the shit out their now unconscious opponent. The fact that the team is fully of cocky jerks and the bot is funded by daddy's autism "cures" just makes it even worse.

The only ones to really see any money is the winner of the giant nut (oh and those bounties they had once). Everyone else might get travel expenses covered, but that's about it. Considering each bot can range from 5-80k it doesn't take long to figure out it's not really a sport of profit, but of passion.

This is why Bite Force has been protesting for the last few seasons as the costs of the bots isn't compensated/eased. Bite Force is a two time giant nut winner, so not just some random low end bot.

Which is part of the reason why Paul was like "shouldn't we be making money?"

I'm feeling better, so I finally got around to watching the episode myself. Right off the bat I want to join the party and say fuck Team Riptide for that 100% unnecessary and unsportsmanlike beatdown. If what I heard about the referee having to pull the controls out of Ethan's hands just to stop the beatdown because he wouldn't listen to the ref's words are true, they should have been suspended for it. Hell, I say ban them for next season to send a message that such behavior is completely unacceptable in this sport.

Aside from that drama, seeing Shatter fall to 0-3 sucks because I like them, but a rookie like Horizon finally working well and getting their first win made up for it. Ominous vs. Shreddit Bro being so awful that they put up a picture-in-picture ad during it was hilarious, but I guess the dedication to show every fight this season instead of off-screening bad ones like they would in past seasons is sort of admirable. Whiplash vs. Monsoon was a better and closer main event fight than I expected it to be, which was nice to see as well.

The Riptide fight reminds me of the scene from Bloodsport when Bolo Yeung has beaten his opponent but instead of stop fighting, he straight up murders his opponent.

I was hoping team Riptide learned they're not gaining any fans after what Ethan did post-fight against Team Madcatter... but no, not even a little. Just straight disrespectful.

Speaking of Madcatter, I loved Martin in the announcer box. By far the best guest they've had. It was a little shocking how soft spoken he is normally.

Usually, I side with the so-called villains such as Jake.

Riptide's team weren't villains, though, they were just plain jerks.

I kinda thought Shatter won, but good for Horizon.

Edit: It's a shame because the first fight was entertaining, while I was in the dark about what was going on behind-the-scenes. I saw Shred say Stop, but it looked like they were trying to move as well, and I'm well aware of the editing the show will do. I thought it was all part of the theatrics.

I will say, we should be directing some of our energy at BattleBots itself. Paul is trying to fight the good fight to give bot builders more compensation from BattleBots. Repairs aren't cheap, and not all teams have the type of sponsors the top-of-the-line bots have in order to keep the train going. This is purely a sport of passion.

i started watching again because (1) i was glad to see the shows i liked in the 2000s were still around and (b) i loved the tone - right at the intersection of a parody of american sports coverage and actual coverage of a competition.

in between the 2000s and today was a huge explosion of "reality tv" and the various behind the scenes shenanigans that go on to make "reality tv" come out the way they want.

many major sports began as passionate hobbies among true believers and evolved into professional competition where everyone got paid (even if only a little). i think battlebots may be getting to that point...it certainly appears to be a moneymaker for the network. but those other sports came along too soon to have the option of evolving into "reality tv".

I didn't know that bit about Riptide and the refs. Now that is the sort of thing that I'd consider truly bad sportsmanship. I can see why the entire production of Battlebots and the other participants would hate Riptide. Side note, maybe it stems from watching NFL games, but I never gave much flak to Jake for his appeal/argumentation with the ref in a past season. But what Riptide did just goes completely against sportsmanship at that point.

Edit: On the topic of Shatter and the other appeals, it makes sense that the production staff would want to limit the success of appeals. Otherwise every team with a record under .50 would want to try their hand at the appeal. It is fair in my eyes for Shatter to lose all points in the Control category. I'm not sure WTF they were thinking, flailing about like idiots and damaging themselves. It would have been better for them to just crash into Horizon and then start swinging, rather than pound the battlebox to the point where their hammer was visibly blunted.

Whoever lost the Shatter/Horizon fight was going to appeal and needed to. Both were winless teams and this was a very close split decision. Even if you thought you were gonna lose, you still appeal anyway because you are in sink or swim at that point.

Also Shatter's next fight is ominous. So they probably figured they had that one on lock.

Yeah, those were my thoughts exactly. No point saving your appeal for a fight you are 0-3 headed in. Only bot that will probably get in if they go 1-3 is Tantrum in my opinion.

The fact that there are no new episodes for the next two weeks (they know BattleBots won't get as many viewers going up against March Madness so there's no point in even trying) means that this Riptide controversy has extra time to stew in the community too. I have a feeling that things are going to get uglier online before they get any better. I've already seen some Riptide defenders online calling Brian Nave and Team Shrederator "snowflakes" and telling people to "cry about it".
