The Shazam Captain Marvel isn't even DC's originally. They acquired him and Fawcett Comics.

As I recall, the original Captain Marvel predates Marvel Comics.

Fawcett Captain Marvel does. By the time DC bought them, Mar-vell, the original captain marvel in 616 had already been created.

Then DC lost the rights to the name because they suck at rights management. See the 4* DC logo.

I don't think DC ever lost the rights to call Billy Batson's super alter-ego Captain Marvel, but they did lose the ability to actually call the comic books that.

Eventually they fed up of working around the name and just changed the character's name to align with the comic's branding.
