I still don't get how this improves his poll numbers, even among Republicans.

Like..who's mind is this changing in his favor. "Well, I didn't vote for Trump in 2020, but now that he's been charged with a crime... well now I have to vote for him!"

Trump has the right to remain silent. He also has the right to speak! And he is going to use that right.

The one I'm wondering about - will Trump exercise his right to a speedy trial? If he demands one they probably need to try him this year, which might be too soon for his liking. Imagine if he is acquitted in September/October 2024?

I don't think it improves his poll numbers against democrats, it improves his poll numbers against other Republicans.

I guess the idea is that Trump supporters that were about to move on with their lives without thinking much about it are reminded of his existence.

How many do you think were about to move on with their lives when the only people who care about Trump in a positive way are obsessed with him

It would also be hard to move on when he starts campaigning for President again.

The justification is that they disobeyed house rules and spoke out of turn...so yeah, let's just completely purge these elected officials from office. About as fascist of a move as it gets.

A state legislator who campaigned on progressive ideas including no abortion bans won overwhelmingly (over 20 points) in her state legislature district. She announced that she'd be joining with the republicans, giving them a supermajority of the governor veto.
Her term started in January. NC has no mechanisms to trigger a recall of any kind.

Wonder how much she got paid, and if she's competing with Sinema for some award somewhere.

This is an issue with many systems around the world. If you change party thats okay, but it should trigger a by-election automatically. Given that it would be a by-election not a regular election it should be winnable so if you want to try and think your individual mandate tops whatever manifesto you ran on you can have a go.

That kind of thing should be illegal nationwide and override any State rights. If people are allowed to outright lie and swap parties after winning they arent who people voted for. God this country is so stupid with so much stuff

To be fair this is just symbolic. We overwrote that law with a ballot measure last November to allow reproductive freedom for all already.

In FPTP by law the electoral mandate is for the individual candidate, not the party. In practice, the parties already have too much power.
