It's my first time ever playing the original JP Green version, and the first time I've played any Pokemon game in Japanese since when I imported Heart Gold early. I'm not doing any special challenge run like a solo or nuzlocke or anything, just a normal playthrough. So far I've beaten Brock and made it through Mt. Moon, and I just got to Cerulean. My team right now is Wartortle, Clefable, Spearow, and Pikachu.

I might keep this topic going with updates if anyone's interested, so feel free to comment or ask questions. Or if no one cares, I'll let it die and keep playing. Whatever.

Is there something special about green since it seems the rest of the world didn't get it?

Is the Mew glitch in that version?

I heard the sprites in the original Japanese games looked like shit compared to the improvements they made when they released Red and Blue in the west

Nah, Green literally just has American Blue's pokemon.

Japanese Blue is the version the rest of the world didnt get. It was basically the 3rd version of Gen 1 (before Yellow). The only notable thing it did was fixed some glitches, change the pokemon graphics, changed the tileset, and let you catch Jynx and Lickitung in the wild.

I'm not sure if you'd call this "something special" but it has a lot of glitches that don't exist in later releases of the game. Which might sound like a crazy thing to say when comparing it to R/B but yes it was even more glitchy

Yes it is. The JP games actually have more glitches that were later fixed in the English releases too.

Some of them are pretty bad. Ironically, Mew looks the worst.

I read that some of the glitches were like not getting a pokedex if you evolved your starter beforehand, Sabrina's match being counted as a win even if you lose, surfing in cliffs, among other things

Yep, that's a thing that can stop your progress in the Japanese versions. It was fixed in the international R/B but returned in international Yellow for some reason. These games are a mess lol

What maniacs are power levelling their starter to 16 before even getting the pokedex? Even as a kid I didn't have time for that lol.

You might want to turn the volume off when you get to Lavender Town

tbf, you cant evolve Pikachu so I guess it's harmless in Yellow

I went through routes 24-25 to get the S.S. Ticket from Bill, catching a Bellsprout (to add to my team), an Abra (to use for the Mew Glitch), and a Mew (to be my HM mule) on the way. I can't remember the last time I used a Bellsprout on an in-game team. Hell, maybe I never have.

Next time I play, I'll take on Misty.
