I figured this would be an early fall release. I didn't do any postgame or DLC for XBC3 - I wanted to wait until the final DLC was approaching so I could ramp back up into the game and hit the ground running. This timing is pretty bad - pixel remaster is today, Zelda in a few weeks...! I'll probably wait to play this one until the Amiibos came out.

luckily, Xeno spoilers aren't "oh this one character was the enemy all along" and instead are buried within paragraphs of biblical conjecture lol

Fired 3 up last night to check the ending out again and refresh myself on the lore and I think I've come around to really like the story and found the ending to be amazing.

I am so ready.

I think the story is wildly uneven, but at its high points it is near the pinnacle of cutscene-based storytelling. At its low points it's near Tales of Zestiria level. It's also a weird game that has a great beginning, a sharp drop off, an all-time great middle, and another sharp drop-off all the way to the ending itself, which is pretty good.

To me it kinda falls in the Chrono Cross bucket: it's good as a standalone game, but feels awkward as a sequel.

I largely agree with this; if I try to think too hard about this game's connection to Xenoblade 1 it all falls apart

maybe the DLC will "fix" this? Or I'll choose to ignore it, more likely. I'm much more interested in seeing "XB3's version of Rex and Shulk" than trying to figure out when and how this falls after the events of XB1.

This crew is so much better than the main XB3 crew. Of course it's cheating by bringing back Shulk and Rex but I love all of them so far.

Also I'm guessing based on Shulk mentioning a ceasefire with Z that they had to work together to defeat "Alvis".

Played a few hours so far. Pretty good! The "affinity points" system actually makes me want to explore the areas more, and this first area is a nice size to start off with.

A few long loading times for fast travel have scared me though. Thought the game crashed for a second.

Yeah, I've experienced that once so far. Was this close to restarting the game, but luckily I waited in desperation just long enough.

5 hours in. Im really feeling it!

This is just so fun to play. Still in Chapter 3, but having a blast. I don't want it to end.

Started and just finishing the night at the end of Chapter 2

The plot so far is honestly completely baffling me like I'm just like who what when why how'ing what the heck this world even is and how things connect... I'm not entirely optimistic since I wasn't big on the base game's plot to begin with, but I mean I gotta let it play out and see how things unfold.

Although historically Xenoblade DLCs honestly haven't done much for filling in blanks. As much as I love Torna it was more about expanding the story than filling in holes left by XB2. Then Future Connected was largely just a disconnected side-adventure that didn't really want to shed any light on Shulk's new world or the coming series connections but instead on whatever the Fog Beasts were.

THAT BEING SAID I'm liking the characters a lot here, Matthew & A are such a refreshing pair, I love having an adult cast again, and while their relationship is still mysterious to me, the two really have a great camaraderie going on so far. But then really though hot damn Shulk's character so cool I'm so happy and intrigued by things like his arm. And then I only now just got a preview of Rex at the very end of Chapter 2 but holy shit I already fucking love Daddy Rex and wow he already looks like a real champ showing up with that sword making the Monado look plain.

I think I might have a bit of an idea about what might be coming with A and so that's another thing I'm interested to see maybe.... but I still don't like Consuls though and they're honestly a layer of anti-hype. I hate that some of my reactions are "wait so like are you from XB3? do I know you?" because their dumb masked designs all blend together and I can't even remember the original Consuls anyways. and seeing Z again or even hearing about him is just a big 'ole sigh

A few changes though I've been like "thank god", ie no more Ouroboros Fusion because frankly they were just OP in XB3 that everything else felt like a slog. Neat using it to finish Launch combos instead of Smash but I think I'm still waiting on more mechanics around it.

tho lol when the game put up a Chain Attack tutorial and start of saying it's changed from the base game I got so excited but then it's really not oops

enjoying battles not being stuffed with 7 characters for now, dunno yet if that changes but it absolutely wasn't a good thing in XB3. also frankly being restricted to specific characters rather than the interchangeable class system is very much welcome... although still certainly aren't as unique as XB1's cast gameplay so far

Shulk reminiscing about "to me" ahhhhhhhh.

Yeah I'm in Chapter 5 now and the story makes sense about 40% of the time, so that's to be expected. I'm still having fun. I've never actually enjoyed any of the "high sci-fi" xeno stuff like caring about who Alvis is, etc.To me the series has always been at its best when it comes to character dynamics (which says a lot about why I hated Xenoblade 2 I suppose).

this was huge for me, just complete fan nostalgia-ing my Colony 9 revisit. It also took walking up the stairs of Dunban/Fiora's place that it hit me that Shulk's arm mirrors Dunban (albeit more severe, being literally replaced with robotics). Of course makes me wonder then if it's a Monado-related infliction but probably not. Also though not the Colony itself but revisiting the entire area was such a joy along with the XB1 music playing, like for this section I've really entered a sequel to XB1. Even just the very tiny Tephra Cave as well, and now then climbing up to the next area that's a lot like Bionis Leg which is where I left off.

I really enjoy the more overt remixes of specific past XB regions in this game rather than the base-game that kind mashed themes from the two previous games together. I loved XB3's revisit to the Distant Fingertip but that's honestly the only moment that recaptured previous game locales. Pentelas Region's nods to Uraya and Makna really didn't feel that strong, and Erythia Seas just felt like oh hey we'll make a massive lake again, that's all Eryth really is right? But now in the DLC this Colony 9 area really did evoke a whole lot of feelings for me, absolutely seeing the layout from XB1 post-game, and combining that with swapping around the soundtrack. Of course it is THE introduction to the Xenoblade series which helps out those feelings even more, but I'm hoping this continues for something XB2 at least (though I know there's not much space left in this DLC story for more)

Story's definitely focusing a lot more on daddy Shulk than I expected, and while it's awkward that A's character still remains such a massive question-mark this far in I really can't complain about all this daddy Shulk stuff that's sending me. Likewise Glimmer is kinda surprisingly shafted so far just feeling like she's here but I'm assuming that she'll get her turn with Rex moments like Shulk has now with Nikol. It's funny you immediately do peg the crystal core as soon as you meet Glimmer but nobody really notes anything of it until Rex comes in so I didn't yet know if they were going this daddy-child thing yet, but then once you do, oh wow she really is just teenage Mythra. Although I did of course say the same with Nikol right away that he's literally baby Shulk.

But yeah definitively more focus right now on Shulk, but hey I mean Rex has already been transformed into the most manliest of badasses and that's enough, what a glow-up. Literal Sean Connery voice keeps throwing me off every time and I just think man Rex you levelled up.

I thought Pentelas did a good job with the Uraya tunnel, but I would've liked them to have included more ruins of Fonsa Myma to explore in there.
