no.

Im on board for more adaptations of Nintendo series, but I wouldnt want it to be all in one homogenous style

i dont think childrens animated comedy is what anyone wants from the Metroid franchise

although I do enjoy the thought of an NCU following the MCU trajectory of having to adapt increasingly obscure characters as leads. Imagine living in a world with a six episode Urban Champion streaming series.

More Nintendo movies but no shared universe.

The whole premise of Smash Bros could still be done as a multiverse movie with people being pulled from different realities to fight.

This is my logic.

In a vacuum this could be fun.

In reality it would all be Illumination.

I do not believe Illumination is capable of making any of the movies that would be in the highest demand. Was this move fine? Yeah, fine, by Illumination standards quite good even, their best movie! It's also basically the same as all their other movies.

Would you want a Metroid or Zelda movie with the same tone as the Mario movie, voiced by celebrities and with licensed pop songs? Because that IS what you would get.

I'm a firm maybe?

Going into with a planned extended universe in films is a good way to run into trouble.

I think if they want to, they should make a smaller-budget Zelda or Metroid movie and see how it works out.

Exactly. The Mario movie was fine and pretty inoffensive. If they did a Zelda movie like this I'd get actually mad. Mario is flexible, I don't think Illumination is capable of committing hard to an aesthetic or vibe that other Nintendo series rely on.

I was thinking about this after I left the theater but the Sonic movies felt more "authentic" to the games for that reason. Yeah they're a mess and have a ton of corporate meddling but they're fun despite that and that's uh. Kind of the whole deal with Sonic games.

Also the best part of both movies are Jim Carrey and Jack Black who totally commit to the bit

Nintendo would be better off making more movies across different studios and then doing a separate Smash Bros movie.

My opinion is that people vastly overestimate the number of Nintendo franchises there are that this would actually work with

Aside from Mario/Donkey Kong, you've got Zelda, Metroid, Kirby, Star Fox... Kid Icarus? Animal Crossing? Splatoon? I'm already being really generous here, since Kid Icarus and Star Fox are basically dead franchises (I'm not even bothering to mention F-Zero, fuck it) and Metroid would be a really tough fit - I could see Samus being a kind of straight man who's just taking her mission really seriously while everyone else is making jokes but that's about it.

There's Pokemon, but it's kind of its own thing and I have absolutely no idea what its legal status would be here.

Like I don't know, I'm just not seeing it. I want to see a Zelda movie for sure, but beyond that I'm not sure what you would do and I'm not sure how you would have them all team up and have it still be cool.

Helping smaller franchises would be the benefit to a NCU though, right? A major advantage of the MCU is that it brings attention to otherwise D list franchises like GotG nobody would have cared about. If Nintendo can hypothetically bring people to invest in a Smash movie (and that's a major hypothetical), then people will turn out for a Kid Icarus movie.

That only works because MCU movies are frankly very homogeneous, and while Nintendo has a consistent brand identity that's not really the case for the individual game series.

I disagree, peak MCU was 2014-2018 and its specifically because all of the movies still felt like they had their own identity.

Cap and Iron Man led the crossover events

Guardians/Strange handled the cosmic/mystic sides of Marvel respectively

Black Panther and Thor heavily expanded on the worldbuilding.

Spidey gave us some street level action

Ant-Man was comedic relief

That's why Infinity War was so cool, we got to see all these different worlds meet up to fight a common threat

They had their own identity, but you watched because you're a fan of superhero movies. There's a formula that you buy into as a fan of that genre. As a Nintendo fan, I might watch a Mario movie, but I have zero interest in an Animal Crossing or Kid Icarus movie.

Maybe but I think that's a huge gamble. GotG worked not just because of its pedigree but because it a type of movie - a sort of Star Wars-esque space fantasy comedy - that people really wanted to see and were willing to buy into. Kid Icarus just isn't gonna have the kind of mainstream appeal necessary. I don't think you can sell it, even if all us video game nerds think it's a good idea.

Aside from Mario and Pokemon I think Zelda is the ONLY other franchise that has both the name power and the conceptual juice to really work. Everything else is too hard to sell to people who aren't weird video game nerds like us.

I can see the world where the good Kid Icarus movie exists but I think it'd flop.

Kid Icarus would be a massive gamble if we randomly got one today, but I'd say a standalone Dr. Strange, Ant-man, GotG, etc movie would be a massive gamble in 2006 without the MCU as well.

If a NCU happened, we'd get a bunch of Mario movies, DK movie, Zelda, probably Kirby and ideally Pokemon (if there's no licensing issues) which culminates in some kind of Smash Bros movie, which could maybe feature and introduce Pit and some other Smash characters. If the Smash movie's a huge hit, then I don't think a Kid Icarus movie following that (with the expectation that it'll somehow tie into Smash 2) would be that much of a gamble. Illumination also has fairly reasonable budgets so you don't really need to make MCU levels at the box office to be a success.

Of course, there's also opportunity cost and whatnot. The Mario universe is big enough that perhaps it's just easier and safer to adapt that instead of tapping other Nintendo properties.

Honestly I think Kid Icarus could work fine, maybe even better than things like Kirby and Metroid. You don't need to play Kid Icarus to enjoy a movie about wacky takes on Greek mythology.

That being said it would have to actually be a good movie, you definitely can't lean on name recognition to make 40 billion dollars with Kid Icarus the same way you can with Mario or Pokemon.
