Once done, you zip, button, and buckle back up. "Through the gate" means you do not undo your belt or top button but rather you unzip, fish it out, do your business, then tuck it back in and zip up. I'm asking because I had a discussion with someone recently about this and both accused the other of being weird. --- Don't mind me.
