With like, sewing and everything? That's amazing and so talented, imagine actually putting together clothing like that its like... like... 3d printing with your hands using cloth material!

Some do, some don't. Some have whole teams of tailors/fabricators on staff to make their costumes for photo shoots and such, some do everything themselves. Either way is valid, because somebody's making that shit from scratch lol

I knew a girl that used the term "closet cosplayer", because she used everything she could find in her closet to make the suits.
She bought some wigs and some props, then she sewed the rest. And she was pretty good.

Most have them custom made

not a good comparison, you absolutely need skill to read and play sheet music or perform something properly that someone else wrote. and i mean there are plenty of good cover bands, i'm sure

I don't know that the analogy holds up on either end. Like Zangulus says, a band is more about the performance.

But I kiiiiind of agree that if the cosplayer isn't making the clothes, designing the outfits, doing their makeup, or doing anything other than just wearing it, they're not a good cosplayer. They're just a specialized fashion model. That said, I don't know enough about the cosplay scene to know if there are a lot of famous cosplayers who do nothing themselves.

Then theyre not real bands. Theyre cover bands at best. Occasionally it can be okay if someone writes a song for a band and explains the meaning behind it but true musicians write their own music.

Pop music doesnt count those people are just performers who tweak their voices to sound better and lip sync on stage. Were talking about actual bands like Green Day and Dave Matthews Band.

There are professional cosplayers at conventions who may have their own booth in the artist alley. You may have to pay to take photos of them or buy their prints.

Saying that it's objectively better to make your own costumes is not gatekeeping. By definition the people who make their own are better, because it's not just putting on a costume. They have a definable skill. Anyone can wear a suit of armour, the better cosplayer is the one who forges it themselves.

A band can be terrible despite writing their own music. And there are cosplayers who make their own costumes but are terrible at it.

I think it's completely fine if you have a team help making your cosplay outfit but I would hope the "specialized model" heh nice term wouldn't be completely hands off on the process. You'd think if the person is that passionate about dressing up you'd want to be involved in the process a lot. Unless this is literally some sort of "professional" cosplayer who dresses up and does zillions of different outfits and events but even still that just rings hollow if it's purely just a job like that.

I'm not sure, but I think most of the more known cosplayers at least have lots of creative input into what they want.

Otherwise yeah, it would be just like buying an outfit at a Halloween store.

modeling? of course not. and they aren't comparable. you can learn certain poses or facial expressions, but before any of that, it's just about looks and connections

I would say a American Football sized squad is only for those professional ones who I hope still have lots of input. As I posted before I don't think you have to knit and sew your own cosplay outfit but definitely be involved somewhere in that level.
