Nah. Midway died, but MK never stopped that grind.

It went like this:

MK Deception came out 2004. Sold 1.9.

MK Armageddon came out 2006. Sold 1 mil.

MK vs DC came out 2008. Sold 1.8

Midway files for bankruptcy in 2009(due to poor spending decisions...idiots). WB buys everything from them.

Midway Games closed in 2010.

NRS opens shortly after.

MK9 came out in 2011. Sold 3 mil.

MKX came out in 2015. Sold 12 million.

MK11 came out 2019. Sold 15 million.

Damn, I never knew Tekken was that big. It always felt like the "other" fighting game series behind Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat.

There are "better" fighting games but MK is easily the most beginner friendly. It makes sense and they're great games at both low and high levels.

It's crazy because after Midway shutdown, MK, as a series, was basically going to die until WB picked up the IP and NRS was born that essentially made sure it's going to be the best sold fighting game.

because at the end of aftermath he went and saw GKL. Also winning mortal kombat tournaments grants immortality, ala goro being around for 10 mk tournaments in the original timeline and the mk9 timeline. The argument he went and saw the kung lao we all know and he knows is stupid cuz he still woulda recognized liu kang in god form.

Oh yeah, and Budokai and Xenoverse games sold in the 8 digits as well. So I dont know if they would be combined or what, but the DBZ name should have representation there. It seems like a huge omission

Tekken was actually the best selling for some time until MK passed it. SF got passed up by the mid 2000's I think when they had that gap between 3 and 4.

MK and Smash are more "mainstream" and especially mk is for the very casual players. Though when it comes in regards to the fighting games genre, Street Fighter is, and probably always will be the top game and is the representative series of the genre.

Tekken was the #1 fighting game for the two highest selling consoles ever. They were essentially a mascot franchise for the early Sony brand. While street fighter essentially disappeared for a long time from the scene just cashing in on Street Fighter 2 remakes.

Why the fuck is that trash so high up there.

Mk has always had the most casual appeal so it makes sense. Especially with the big name guest characters.

I'm curious to see how sf6 does. It's done a lot to bring in new people (modern control mode, in depth tutorials, as well as over the top flashy visuals) and the beta received a lot of praise from people who don't normally play fighters

The intro videos for Deadly Alliance, Deception, and Armageddon were the best.

MK has the coolest lore, characters, and music of any fighting series. It deserves that spot. Nobody clamored for a non-fighting game exploring the worlds of SF, Tekken, GG, or KoF.

MK Deception made me long for a MK RPG where you get to explore the realms and just have an adventure in the MK Universe
