I went back and played a bit of this yesterday. I was wondering if I'd have the interest or patience to read the story. I kept getting side-tracked by messing around in training mode and unlocking characters.

I do like the idea of a story mode where you can switch characters on the fly though. It would have been cool if you were canonically playing as a wandering, shape-changing force with whatever name you entered at the start.
I'd take it over a Mortal Kombat style story mode where it picks out characters and makes you use them at certain points at least.

I'm guessing everyone skipped the text boxes and went straight to the button mashing, right?
I used to spam that vertical spin move with Kilik. Nowadays I'm far more sophisticated, now I spam the big horizontal double spin with Astaroth.

It was probably my favorite mode in any Soul Calibur game. I remember I would mostly use Talim in that game, but I also liked Cassandra, Yun-Seong, Raphael, Necrid, and Link in the GC version (sadly he didn't return for the HD port).

I might re-download the HD port on my XB1 soon, it's been a while since I've played it.

I only disliked those dungeon ones where you couldn't save between them I think unless I'm wrong but they had several paths to take mostly fighting the same enemy with different handicaps

I never got to play SC3 because it was Playstation exclusive. The only SC games I've played a decent amount are 2, 5, and 6. I borrowed SC4 from a friend for like a week when I first bought my Xbox 360 (which was only a couple of months before SC5 came out) but that's it.

I'm playing the GC version too. Link has a grab where he pushes them along the ground the same way he pushes a block and then does a backflip off of them.
Necrid's soul charge makes the world go round. When I played as him I couldn't go 10 seconds without making him beat his chest, radiate green light and do a distorted Captain Falcon "YEZS!"

100%ing it as a kid was one of the only things I did in a video game as a child (like, pre-13) that I look back on and think was genuinely challenging

I remember beating it in a couple days but the new game plus mode took me a long time

I had a ton of fun with it back in the day, like it was legit maybe my favorite gaming experience in my childhood. I've figured it probably doesn't hold up super well because fighting game single-player is now pretty obviously just an obviously worse experience to me than multiplayer in ways I never noticed growing up, but I've still always wanted to revisit it.

Also, these were never the same after they changed the voices.
Lots of the characters in this game sound like crazy people who love what they do.
I didn't play 3, but by the time the other games rolled around, everyone had been dulled down. Especially Nightmare, give me the guy yelling about souls over generic demon voice any day.

SCII Edge master mode was awesome, but there's something about the individually crafted stories, book presentation and music of Soul Edge that I just love.

And yeah, the new voices and everything being the same language from sciii onwards was just an objectively bad decision. Played SCVI recently through streaming and... glad I didn't pay money for that. Really doesn't feel like a game that cares about its own franchise.

Also, being able to shout something on the face-off screen was awesome.

I played SCVI a couple of years ago - with it being the first SC game I played since SCII - and I enjoyed it well enough. What were your problems with it?
