That always seem kinda odd to me.

You can get a literal slave living next to your mom's room and your party are just like "Oh we mildly disaprove of that."

Or you can choose to pay her as a live-in maid with a legitimate job. And if you do so your mom is still like "Eww, you got an Elven slave? Thats gross son." but that's it. There's no like like "Moooooom! She's no slave. I pay her! You don't even pay rent."

That's weird on both fronts, why is your mum just mildly irritated by you being a slaver and why don't even try to deny it if she's not.

I mean is the implication that we are having sex with her? That seems kinda dark for a kids game. It's also super weird if you're dating Merill, Isabella or Fenris that you just have a slave casually outside the room as you bang.

And weirder still is that SPOILERS AHEAD

She is totally fucked if she is not your slave. If you give her money Fenris remarks that an uneducated slave walking around a city with a fat coin purse is just going to be killed, raped or captured instantly.

And if you "let her go" after enslaving her in the city. She goes to the Chantry which Anders then quickly blows up.

So.... If you didn't enslave her she dies.

That felt weird to me. Like the writers weren't communicating.

I've never played it, but do you know nothing about actual slaves?

Of course the assumption is probably that you're sleeping with her. That was just kinda normal. For a long time slaves were treated the way you'd treat something like a broome or farm equipment.

If someone was sweet on one or super kind they could be a butler or maid but that instantly raised a bunch of questions. >.>

Ah yes, Fenris, the font of wisdom and insight.
Me: "Hey Fenris, what's your plan for getting vengeance on the guy who hurt you, the goal to which you've devoted your life?"
Fenris: "I'm going to sit in his vacation home and drink wine."
*three years later*
Fenris: "I don't think this plan is working."
Me: "Ya think? Are you at least going to fucking tidy up the place you live in?"
Fenris: "What's 'tidying up'?"
Fenris talks a lot of stuff about things he doesn't know anything about. I'm the Champion of Kirkwall, this isn't the Imperium, employed Orana is doing fine. Like, for at least 3 years she's doing fine. Also, the mom bit is just a bug.

Also, why do you assume you're having sex with her?

But yeah, the fact that Anders or Merril doesn't immediately tell you to go fuck yourself if you do take her as a slave is just the part where the game aspects of the game. It does give you rivalry with Merrill but nowhere near enough.

Honestly one thing that DA2 should have followed through on was give your party members more chances to tell you that they don't want to work with you anymore.

DA2 is actually probably my favourite DA. Scaling the story back to just one city and letting the story play out over several years is a really interesting decision. I just wish they'd done more with it, like, let us fill out some of what happens in the years between the different acts, especially on the relationship side. I'd also appreciate it more if the story had more signs of people growing older and being in different stages of their lives. I didn't buy it until a long while after release which is probably why I'm unbothered by how the game is kind of junky and reuses maps like nobody's business, because I wasn't expecting GOTY.

I vaguely remember employing her in the house and having Fenris whine about slaves and quietly huffing before wandering off when I mentioned that she's compensated for work that is familiar to her.

But that's the thing with certain Bioware RPGs, you really have to coddle and placate your party members because otherwise they can't get their shit together even if the world is literally at stake. E.g. in the first game I wanted Morrigan to help with the noble's son who had gotten possessed and she refused because I didn't have enough Kiss Ass Points. So in the end I just bargained with the demon and told Morrigan to hit the road when she suddenly wanted a favor from me near the end of the game. From what I remember the elf assassin was the only character that was totally chill and on the level.

The assassination thing, from what I remember, is more or less your introduction to him. Also, so long as you haven't totally neglected him the entire game he shouldn't betray you when he's forced to choose a side. Morrigan on the other hand was far too pissy given the state of the world and the trouble she was in. It was a trifling amount of effort on her part to chip in but she couldn't be bothered.

But, yeah, it sort of throws a wrench into the series because Bioware assumes everyone will fall over themselves to agree to her plan at the end of the game.

It's almost like she was raised in the wilds by someone stuck up that made her prissy.

I'm kinda with you that Bioware got lazy and made Morrigan approve of a lot of the "Evil" options even when they made no sense. When Morrigan always seemed self-centred rather than a Reddit user in terms of her attitude. But I don't think there was anything wrong with her character or dialogue or motivations. They all made sense and she bounced off the party well.

Except Wynne, her and Wynne had like 0 chemistry.

But, yeah, it sort of throws a wrench into the series because Bioware assumes everyone will fall over themselves to agree to her plan at the end of the game.

the choice is literally:

  1. Bonk a hottie and live
  2. Don't a bonk hottie and you or your best friend dies.
I think it's easy to see why Bioware expected most people to agree. There is no logical reason not to agree behind "It's a video game choice so let's pick the other option on repeat playthrough"

Same way that nobody gave the Reaper Baby body to TIM in Mass Effect 2 on their first playthrough because there's no reason to

Hmm I wonder why

Man, Alistair was such a bitch regarding Loghain. It clearly made the most sense and the Grey Wardens have always been about practicality over feelings. Then he gets pissy and threatens to leave and actually does if you go with the plan that would end with both you and him guaranteed to live.

I get it

Alistair is still a man and a young man. Loghain betrayed them all, killed his brother, killed his father figure, killed all the other wardens, killed a huge amount of capable soldiers and caused the Darkspawn to roam the lands unhinged.

Alistair also viewed being a Grey Warden as an honor. Giving to the man who hated Grey Wardens and caused the death of half the country is a sick perversion to him.

Loghain then spends a year blaming the Wardens for the deaths at Ostagar and making your life hell.

Sure making Loghain a warden is logical and pragmatic given the cimumstance but it's totally reasonable that Alistair is horrified by it,

Alistair will literally kill Loghain unprompted if you make him fight the duel. He wants Loghain dead.

His actions and motivations are totally understandable.

But you don't do that for his redemption. You do it so that both the Warden and Alistair have an entire lifetime ahead of them to put the world in a better place. On the flipside a simple execution of Loghain makes everything so... pointless. He has no remorse, he catches a sword, and everything still sucks. Not much of an end, other than some momentary(and misplaced) glibness.
