Kind of topical since ToTK took away the dupe trick people were using. (And enjoying a lot, from what I saw)

For me, the main one is anti-fun patches, mostly nerfs. Payday 2's my most recent example of a game going from being my most played to dropped like a rock over night.
I still cling to TF2 but I've walked away a few times because of stuff like this. The 2011 patch that temporarily killed micspam, contracts and weapon skins, lootboxes. If they hadn't bundled MVM mode with it, the Pomson 6000 nerf would have been irredeemable.

Another one that sticks out to me. I didn't play Elden Ring but when they killed that rapid fire ice stomp attack, that was really lame. That was the only fun looking thing I've seen from that game.

But that's just me. I'm curious where other people draw the line.

IDK, maybe if there's an upgraded/special edition of it I don't have access to because it's exclusive to something else. It's like yay I'm stuck with the "inferior" version now and suffering FOMO....

Nerfs, especially if they're constant. Big/negative changes like what OW2 did when it released can also stop me from playing something ever again.

They nerfed it right after I spammed it to beat Malenia the first or second time I think. It was fun(probably busted) while it lasted.

Either a new game coming out, or the game just being too long.

Like, I never beat Assassins Creed odyssey even though I enjoyed it because it just kept going.

I'm most curious to hear if anyone else has suddenly walked away from something they'd previously enjoyed for years. Like an MMO or fighting game.

I was also expecting someone to bring up luck. Either a game devolving into a luck-fest or horrible RNG screwing someone over so ruthlessly that they instantly don't want to play any more. Maybe that's more of a speedrunner thing.

The save file getting corrupted is one thing. It happened when I played Final Fantasy X and Persona 3 FES for the first time. When a save gets corrupted and I lose hours of progress, I don't feel like doing all that shit again for months, if not years.

A game being long is another because I don't have shit for an attention span or patience anymore. It took me 3 and a half years to get to December in my new game plus playthough of Persona 3 FES because I was always getting distracted by other games. I still haven't finished it and don't really feel like finishing it because I know there aren't enough days left to max out all the Social Links.

When I used to play gacha final fantasy type games id stop once it got too bloated and you had to manage like 7 different stat boosts for a huge roster of characters. Wound up forgetting what i even had or didnt have at times and completing events felt like "lets get this over with" rather than excitement

There was one game that came out a while ago called Dungeon Defenders. Man, I had a blast with that game. Put over 300 hours into it. There was...not really an exploit, but a method of making money that was perfectly reasonable and valid that they patched out and there were no other good ways of acquiring money that I just dropped the game entirely.

Destiny 2 comes to mind with the weapon sunsetting. I know they got rid of it, but that was the final straw for me after probably close to 2-3k hours in Destiny 1 and 2.

I quit runescape (runescape 3) the first time because my account got hacked and I lost my red Santa hat, black Santa hat, hween mask set, 5 party hats (blue, white, red, yellow, purple) and rest of my gold. This actually made me cry for like 3 days.

Then like 3 years later i decided to give oldschool runescape a try. Quit that after a year and 3 months because my living circumstances changed. Restarted again a year and a half later but then quit after like 9 months because of burn out.

Within the 9 months i Had gotten 200m fishing xp and during the middle of my runecrafting grind to 200m I realized that I should be focusing on school instead. I'm not great at multitasking

I played Hearthstone for years and when they introduced the battle pass system, it aligned poorly with how I played the game so I just decided to call it quits. I had played since the beta but since I never put in real money, I was sort of just treading above water the whole time so a change in the game's economy had big impacts.

Neverwinter Nights 2. *Spoilers incoming*

For the longest time there was this inevitable crash late in the game, during the loading screen after I trigger the start of the attack on Crossroad Keep.
That was a real shame because I thoroughly enjoyed the whole process before that, and NWN2 was pretty much the first RPG afaik where you could run your own community, and build up the strength of your forces for the final battle. I couldn't find any patches to circumvent that crash either.

Years later I bought it again when it was released on GOG, and it finally worked!
The attack on Crossroad Keep was pretty anticlimactic imo, but I very much enjoyed the final (challenging) battle against the King of Shadows, and was impressed by the storytelling choice that the King of Shadows inevitably converts some of your companions to his side, even if you did your best to treat everyone right. I bet that was Chris Avellone's idea to put that in.

a sense of finality or accomplishment does it for me. if i feel like i beat a game, and then some dlc or expansion or something comes out with "but wait there's more!" i had already clocked out when i beat the game. drawing me back is nearly impossible.

these days i tend to wait until "ultimate" editions come out with everything included, that way i can enjoy everything and not feel like i missed out. maybe a big reason i don't even buy new games anymore.

I bailed on World of Warcraft because of the shitty tier system that the guilds adopted. "You're a newbie? You only get half the gold and no rolls on magic items, but you need to participate in the weekly 8 hour raids for 3 months to make it to the next level!"

Would have to be some sort of game-breaking bug or glitch that can't be worked around, otherwise, if I still really like the game, that means I'm still enjoying it so I wouldn't stop playing otherwise.

I started playing Wild ARMs 3 a while back and it seems like a cool game, but it had auto-scrolling text during story sequences with no option to turn it off or even change the speed. That made it unplayable for me.

Played pokemon go daily from launch, but them rolling back QoL updates, constant nerfs and the lack of QA going from funny to obnoxious had quit entirely. I only have the game installed because it takes a full week for the transfer feature to Home to recharge energy without paying.

Yeah, I played EA's NHL series online for many years, every year. Normally 2000+ games played online each year. For a bunch of games I was in an organized competitive league for the EASHL mode, it was fun. I was among the top guys on the servers, but dropped the game a couple games back. 22 was the first I haven't bought since probably the 90s.
