Because theres so much anti-LGBT rhetoric, hatred, and legislation being pushed by todays GOP platform, Im wondering how their voters feel.

If you identify as a conservative, what would you do if your child (hypothetical child if you dont have one) came out to you as gay or trans?

It's something many conservatives should think about. I have thought about it with my daughters, but I am liberal.

There's only one right answer to this question, no matter political ideologies/affiliations; Support them. Period.

I would hope that most would be supportive of their own kid, but they may do so at the risk of severe blowback from their families and communities.

There are also (some) conservatives who will make exceptions to their stances when it affects them directly, but will not change their broader view (eg abortions are okay for their 15 year old daughter, but fuck everyone else)

I'm confused. What does lower taxes and smaller government have to do with sexual orientation, gender identity, or race? Why would a conservative be unable to answer the OP? I'm trying to think of a reason...

I remember hearing about a man whose son died shooting up a gay bar and his dad was worried when he found out his son died at a gay bar but was relieved to learn he was the shooter

Oh man, the last time we had a topic like this a conservative said they'd send their kid to one of those camps in hopes they beat it out of them and another one said they'd disown them but have a real hard time doing it. I hope this one doesn't get that dark.

I mean, there are already established guidelines for gender affirming care that use an evidence based approach, endorsed by all the major medical organizations. This includes trans children / adolescents, and is proven effective.

I'm not a conservative anymore, really, but I would accept who they are. I like to think I would do the same even before I drifted more toward the center of the scale.

Something a lot of aggressive and hateful parents don't seem to understand is this: It's pointless to try to fight someone about their own identity. If they are gay, bi, trans, etc. then no amount of reprimand, abuse, discouragement, etc. will do anything to change that. All you're doing is making yourself look cruel, selfish, and heartless.

The only thing about your child that you can control in the long term is whether they love their parents or not. You can be a good parent and most likely be loved and respected, or you can be a bad parent and end up losing them forever.

A good parent doesn't disown or discourage their child from being who they really are.

Because these aren't the only conservative values and increasingly as the Midwest and Southern rural bloc gains power over the party it will continue to diminish as the central motive of the party. Social issues are an easier sell than complicated economic issues and it is hard to reconcile small government to a voting bloc on the receiving end of some form of welfare.
