Do you like it?

Seems to be an underrated genre in my book. A lot of people outright dismiss it.
As i get older, I enjoy it more and more. It helps vinyl albums of classical music can be so inexpensive, making it really accessible.
My favorite is harpsichord stuff. when they've got the notes flying, it's head banging stuff!

I used to like it, but after a while I learned that classical is practically just a Top 40 station at this point, you can't find any obscure shit cuz it wasn't documented 400 years ago

Don't think there was any obscure classical from that time period lol. It was pretty much exclusively made by dudes owned/paid by the aristocracy. And more than likely only relatively wealthy people could afford to obtain instruments and train themselves to be conposers and to travel and make a living that way

I used to play horn in a community orchestra, though I left it when I moved away, it went under due to Covid, and I haven't gotten back into community activities since moving back. I'm a fan, though obviously it's a pretty broad genre and it's not all good.

There's definitely some good contemporary stuff out there (mostly movie and game scores, actually), though I find a lot of the people that consider themselves contemporary composers tend to really like making more "artsy" stuff that throws in weird dissonance, unusual rhythms, and other things that generally come across as more a matter of deliberate counterculture than actually trying to make something that's enjoyable to listen to. That's not to say there's no place for dissonance, since I do like me some Stravinsky, but the whole angle of trying really hard to be weird and artsy doesn't really appeal to me (in any artistic medium).

It's true that you aren't going to find anything by anyone that wasn't popular enough to be documented, since that's just the nature of history, but there's still plenty of stuff out there that anyone that isn't a classical scholar (or romantic, or baroque, since the distinction kind of matters when you're talking academia) isn't likely to recognize. Heck, even within the Bachs and Beethovens of the world, there are reams upon reams of works that the vast majority of people you talk to won't have heard before (especially Bach, who was insanely prolific).

Folk music was still a thing, and I imagine there were plenty of "indie" musicians within those scenes, but they generally couldn't make a living doing that, their instruments would have been limited to relatively cheap ones (so no pianos or organs), and none of them would have been literate enough to write anything down.

Yeah, you would for sure have to have an education and lots of money for a music education as well. Even though Mozart is often portrayed as some kind of beggar, it's more than likely completely false

Yep. For all the "he was a child prodigy," the only reason that prodigiousness (that's a word now) actually amounted to anything is that his father was rich and influential enough and had enough rich, influential friends to get him an audience and cultivate that talent. He may have had some financial struggles through his life, but he would never have been anything other than upper class (bearing in mind that class in this case is a matter of social status and not wealth, which can be hard for us in the modern world to wrap out heads around).

It really can't be overstated the extent to which recording technologies have made music more accessible. There's an argument to be made that it's become too accessible and we take it for granted as a result, but I definitely prefer the modern paradigm over having most music only be available to the aristocracy.
