I love that Woj is holding out hope that Lillard won't end up on Miami, even though he's quietly admitting no one can come up with a better offer

You think these reporters don't care about the stuff they put out? They may not care about teams, but they don't want to get embarrassed by getting a report wrong. Stories of Woj's ego on this stuff are definitely out there.

Cade/Ivey/Bojan/Stewart/Duren

Bench
Monte/Burks/Harris/Livers/Bagley

3rds
Killian/Sasser/Ausar/Wiseman

Let Ausar come off the bench to begin with and earn his top spot or until Bojan gets dealt and we have to change everything around

League sources say that the talks were sturdy enough to discuss a potential trade framework Bogdanovi and Killian Hayes coming to Dallas, Tim Hardaway Jr. and JaVale McGee going out but its unclear what else would have been required from each party to expand it to a four-team deal and what ultimately caused those talks, however serious, to stall. (Dallas is incredibly cautious to trade its 2027 first-round pick, one team source says, which the team could not put typical protections due to the first-rounders which it owes.) - via The Athletic

In 3 years that deal will be middle of the pack, the cap is probably going up 10% each year for the rest of the CBA. We do the same thing in the NFL, guy gets new richest deal and we go WOW what an overpay! THen in a few years it's like wow what a bargain!

Max deals are limited % wise, so it's not really out of control. These big deals are a sign that the NBA is growing exponentially, because if this is allowed then that means the cap is really high, which means lots of profits happened.

there's also a trade kicker, which is particularly ominous - could be a huge disincentive to teams trading for him

obviously if we win a title or multiple titles with brown then i'm thrilled. just worried about how this handicaps the team going forward. i understand the want to break up superteams, but i don't love it when it punishes teams for good homegrown drafting

i'm concerned about the Cs' title window largely because of age and health - and now we'll struggle even harder to find depth (payton pritchard looks like he'll be our third guard, which is not where i particularly want to be)

Depends on how you think sports should flow. I believe that every team should inevitably have to deal with everyone wanting to get paid and sometimes that means you can't keep everyone. Otherwise you end up with another golden state. Maybe it is punishing but it's a necessary evil imo. Also the league gives advantages to those homegrown teams in what they can offer deal-wise, so it's not all against the team.

the issue with golden state was a cap spike that resulted in their being able to sign durant. there was nothing wrong with them before that.

the supermax helps homegrown teams to re-sign their free agents, but because it hamstrings them so badly in terms of team construction it partially contributes to their leaving as well. plus, the presence of the supermax counterintuitively forces home teams to pay it, even when the player might not be worth as much. home teams giving more money to their guys makes sense, but the deals should only count against their cap at the maximum these players would be getting to play for other teams.

It doesn't hamstring them terribly. If you have 1 supermax guy, you still have 65% of your cap space to play with (more once you go over the cap via exceptions) and if you have 2 guys like that then you're probably a really good team, like boston is. You shouldn't be able to have everything. Golden state wasn't hamstrung. Milwaukee wasn't hamstrung. Denver wasn't hamstrung. The Lakers weren't hamstrung. It's not like the supermax is a death knell to a team's window. If a team can't pull value from their other draftees, or minimum players, then they deserve to be punished for those, because those guys simply become more important once you're into the luxury tax, and even then it pales in comparison to the starters. Like the nugs had only 8 guys that played double digit minutes in the playoffs and they ran train over everyone.

I don't think the celtics should be "allowed" to give brown the super max, tatum his new supermax, keep porzingis, and give williams III his new big deal with no consequences, AND have money to play around with actually filling the bench out with things like good mid-level exceptions while having brogdon's lame duck deal on the books. The celtics aren't being punished for paying guys the supermax, they're being punished for having a big deal that didn't pan out in brogdon, and now potentially porzingis depending on how that works out, and for having their other draft prospects contribute basically nothing.

my solution to the supermax hurting smaller franchises is just to have only the regular max amount count against the cap. only for the team who signed you to the contract though, if you get traded then the whole thing counts against the cap

also switching teams via free agency would also prevent these players from getting the supermax, which they're also not going to be in favor of

That's how I've always thought it should be too.

Problem with the supermax is if a player is eligible you basically have to pay it. And the only way you're winning with a supermax contract on the books is if that player is a top 5 player during that deal (or a large bulk of it). And by the last years of a supermax contract, any player who would be eligible for it has a ton of mileage on their legs. They may be late 20s / early 30s but if it's a supermax player they probably played a lot of minutes and saw a lot of the ball and you would expect the team saw playoff minutes too.

So there's a far greater chance of a supermax ruining a team than causing it to win since they are likely already an over the cap team by the time they sign the deal.
