*a symbol of quality

Recent works like shows and movies are facing a decline in quality, whether it's Pixar, MCU, Star Wars, live-action, etc. It's bad enough that Disney has a massive, long history of scummy business practices.

Meanwhile, other companies like Sony and Universal are making better animated films, ironically.

What has Sony made, two good animated movies? And Universal has only made one or two good ones in recent years

Disney has had some flops but they've had plenty of good shit too

Your nostalgia for when you were a kid and "Disney was better" is making you forget about all the absolute garbage that they've always produced alongside the really good, popular stuff that you (and many others) loved

There's still a lot of good Disney stuff being made, you're just not the target audience anymore

It's the classic rock effect but for TV shows and movies

They've never been a "symbol of quality." They're a business that produces entertainment, with an advantage of owning a number of incredibly well-known franchises.

Like TMOG said, their output, like any other film or TV studio, has always ranged anywhere from abysmal to excellent.

Mario, Spider-Verse and Lightyear has made people really weird about these companies lately. You'd think that was the only output from those studios.

Soul and Luca were both great too. Haven't seen Turning Red yet but have heard good things about that as well.

That's just the animated movies.

They HAD a good streak with Marvel until endgame and now ita very hit and miss. For animated movies we had frozen 1 2, Zootopia, Moana, Encanto, even Raya was pretty decent. Pixar had soul and the red panda movie both pretty good. Feels very specific that the movies developed post pandemic suffered the most in quality.

And it's like okay Mario was popular and made a lot of money. But Jurassic Park/World is in a much shittier place than Star Wars.

Spider-Verse is great. But Morbius and Venom: Let There Be Carnage are still significantly worse than anything from the MCU.

People are really selective to hit the narrative that Disney is worse then the others. Like "Wow Disney aren't making the best movie in every blockbuster genre every single year. Will they be okay?" is a really silly standard.

They started following algorithms. Trying to market to whatever makes the most money. They all became old men and got scared of taking risks. See crap like Chicken Little, which started this.

Yeah, they hit gold occasionally with Frozen and Encanto.

Also, most of the good 90s staff went to Dreamworks.

I think it's been mostly the quality of their Disney+ shows and movies. They've been releasing waaaaaaaaay to many things and the quality has definitely suffered. With major films in theaters, it's been a little better. Except for some of the Marvel movies lately.

Yeah they're not. They had a pretty long run of untouchable hits in the 90s, but somewhere in the 2000s they had a few missteps...and now it's almost like 50% of Disney movies are just bad. They don't do classic animated movies anymore, just CGI animation and live-action reboots. Some of them are still very, very good. Frozen was great, Zootopia was great...so as a whole they can still put out great movies, it's just not nearly a guarantee.

Marvel and Star Wars have been hit-or-miss, too. Especially the MCU post-Endgame. Some of it's good, some of it's 'meh,' but at least only a couple of the Marvel films have been actually bad (Love and Thunder being one of those).

I think the bigger drop-off, though, was Pixar. Pixar had an absolutely godlike run of hit after hit after hit from Toy Story all the way up to Toy Story 3, over the course of about 15 years. Cars 2 was the first one they released that mostly 'ehhhhh....' and then they started to have a mediocre movie once every year or so instead of never.

Brave was "ehhhhh....", The Good Dinosaur was "ehhhhhh....", Onward was "ehhhhh...." Lightyear was "ehhhhh...."

And this new Elemental one looks like it's gonna be super predictable. "Oh they're making jokes about how water puts out fire, and water and fire together make steam. Whoaaaaaaaaaaa."

But yeah, topic is correct.
