And man, both of them are great. The original still has some of the best writing and characters in the zombie sub-genre.

The remake sacrificed that because there were way more characters, but the action and horror scenes are a lot better, since the zombies are a constant threat because they're fast and even their scratches are infectious.

But I like the reason for leaving and the zombies retaking the mall better in the original, but they're both really well done. The ambiguous endings of both are also really solid to show how fucked this world now is.

Both still indeed great films. Ive been meaning to watch the original again but keep forgetting.
