So it came up in the Best New Character nomination topic, and I wanted to give people a chance to officially vote.

Quick rundown, typically new interpretations of a character can count as new characters for the purpose of the contest (ex. Characters from the show Gotham can count separately from their original comic book version)

Generally video game characters count by their first appearance in their series (ex. GoW2018 Kratos was not separate from the original Kratos). Same with other major characters like Mario, Kirby, Samus, etc.

Long story short, should different game appearances of Link count as distinct new characters? Please vote using your best judgment

I haven't played much Zelda, but it's really hard to argue Links are "new interpretations" when Link barely has any characterization anyway. So no.

I personally would say no, but the reality is you cant really say no without significantly cracking down on new versions of the same character. Link is more different than most of those.

to me there are 3 versions - 'normal' Link, CD-I Link and Toon Link. I definitely would not count Twilight Princess Link as a new character, that's 'normal' Link.

Yeah, cd-i Link should be eligible when we get to that year IMO, and while I know he's not who was meant by Toon Link, the "excuuuuuuse me princess" Link should also be allowed in his year.

So I guess that puts me in camp 2

It's definitely a tricky spot to be in, especially with how prevalent multiverse stuff is becoming and all the questions those movies start to raise about who is considered a distinct character.

There's not like a fully clear cut answer which is why I usually just like to say "if they feel like a new character, feel free to nominate them." But that also only goes so far when it comes to a character that has a 90% chance of winning the whole thing every time he's nominated

Similarly I wouldn't really allow Sephrioth (KH2) for 2006 if anyone had nominated him (thank you for not, B8)
