A Vietnamese student has been arrested on suspicion of providing barber services without a license at his home in Tokyo, serving as many as 3,000 customers since April 2021, police said Monday.

Nguyen Van Thang, a 24-year-old vocational school student, was detained on Tuesday last week for allegedly offering a haircut and a shave to a compatriot for 1,500 yen at his condominium in Fussa, western Tokyo, that day, the police said.

The police believe the suspect attracted Vietnamese customers through social media and earned 4.5 million yen ($43,000) in total. He has denied the allegations, they said.

Regulatory licensing is really bad and unnecessary for a lot of services and needs to end. I know this article is for Japan, but the issue exists here in the US as well

There's a good reason why we license barbers in the US (and I'm sure Japan, too, as indicated by the article), such as for the regulation and maintenance of sanitation and public health.

We also regulate restaurants and whatnot, too, even if it's "just making sandwiches or flipping burgers"

Some states require 1200 hours of training to get a licence to be a barber .

Much of it is entrenched organizations already in the industry that are trying to limit newcomers into the field

Regulation is there to protect you. Regulation doesnt exist to just to "make things overly complicated" it exists to protect things we value people, nature, our economy - that would not otherwise be protected, and most importantly regulation needs teeth, because regulation without teeth might as well not be regulation at all.

Let me tell you a story, my cousin was injured, severely by an unlicensed barber, in a scissor-related incident that if he had gone to a licensed barber wouldn't have occurred, and that's why licensing is so important.

He was supposedly a neighbor, so I can understand.

Look, if the guy gave 3000 haircuts, that's quite the foot traffic / noise from the next door.
No one wants to live next to a business.

The neighbor was probably pissed about the traffic/noise, and he finally figured out why and decided to get rid of it to recover his minimal qol.

Wouldn't trust anyone to cut my hair without a license tbqh..

No idea how it is in Tokyo, but we actually have some problems with "illegal haircutting".

On one hand, lot of black labour, on the other outright abuse of "employees".

There are cases of "self-employeed" hairdresser who are "renting" the chair in a saloon, and are doing their "freelancer" stuff there.

The result? Well, self-employeed people are not part of any regulations aimed at employees, so they can shit on any kinds of maximum working hours, social benefits, and so on.

The result is that the "hairdresser industry" here is probably one of the most shady and abusive industries you can find in our streets in open daylight. (Right next to delivery jobs).

^ Yeah there's a lot of that in the UK too.

Also "volunteer" hairdressers getting "experience" who are working basically slave labour
