My car was backed into for the second time in a year and a half. Both times in the parking lot at work. Any guesses as to the estimate to fix?

My guess is someone tried to back into the adjacent spot, ran into TC's car, and then fled the scene.

Well you see, it's just kind of an awkwardly designed parking lot. It's a restaurant with kind of a free-for-all design. My design skills are abysmal, but it's something like this.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/3/1/5/AAO7dSAAEkjr.png

Those bottom spaces are employee parking. It's the parking spots to the side of the building that are the problem. The people just back right into the employee cars. There is enough space that they can get out if they are good at driving, but the problem is not everybody is good at driving.

Could take the repairs into your own hands. Drill a screw into the center of the dent and pull on it with your fingers until the dent is out. Then sand the door down, put some body clay on it, sand until it's flush, then repaint it.

Boom - fixed.

Youre better of scrapping the Focus for parts if thats bothering you enough to fix it, especially if youre driving around on rusted steelies without covers, those automatic transmissions are dog shit.

or just go to a junkyard and find a replacement door for 10% of the price to pop out that dent and replace it yourself

Absolutely shake him/her down. That is insane that your boss of all people would hit your car then just leave like that. Thats a felony.

If tc wants to spend 3500 on a car that is maybe worth half that then who am I to stop him. But my point still stands the generation of Ford Focus op has is a rolling time bomb for when the tranny goes out, assuming he has an automatic.

Theres this thing called insurance that covers things like this. It makes no sense to go and get a whole other car. This is just terrible advice all the way around.

Literally every car ever made is a time bomb. They will eventually go out.

If tc has insurance then he sure as hell isnt smart enough to use it by filing a claim and waiting on their approval for body work, and is instead getting a quote from the most outrageously expensive body shop known to man, all the while bitching about it online, or he doesnt have underinsured coverage which my condolences to tc if that is the case.
If he wants to dump that much money into his car even knowing its an older bottom of the barrel car then he is more than welcome to. Im just providing an argument against doing so on a 10+ year old car thatll be lucky to make it another 5 and isnt worth it because its dented. Hes better off keeping the dent and having internal beef with his boss if you ask me. Oh, and I never told him to get another car. Stop trying to find loopholes in my posts to make your argument tread water.

If tc was actually smart about his finances and he really doesnt have any other choice besides fixing it oop, instead of keeping up with the Jones by crying over spilled milk, hes better off saving the $3500 for a down payment on a new car when his pos focus inevitably goes out as you put it.

I mean this is pretty sound advice. KBB is probably like 6k on it. They will probably not total it, so might as well get the 3500 and put it towards a new vehicle

That is a SamsungGearS2 alt account. The guy from Hellhole who keeps saying fuck off and shut the fuck up. Weird hill for him to die on with insurance. It won't apply every time, but insurance makes the difference between how much your expenses are. Not just car insurance.

Haha I'm not offended by samsungalt's comments, they seem mostly sound. Though I never intended to pay $3500 to fix it. I only paid $3k for it in the first place at 40k miles because of the issues, and it's done what I needed it to do for the past 4 years. I barely drive (iirc I've put like 8k miles on it in 4 years) because I live around 2 1/2 miles from where I work, and when not raining (as it unfortunately did that morning) I just ride my bike/ebike. I didn't file an insurance claim because I had a couple days to do so and I found out before then who hit me and the situation. The owners of the establishment are a 65-year-old woman and her son. She was borrowing his truck that day, and he directly told me that there were new scuff marks on the back of his truck and that he suspected that was what had hit my car. She says she never felt anything and didn't know anything about it (not sure how plausible that is), but offered to pay out of pocket to 'make it right' because obviously it would affect her son's insurance policy because it was his truck.

Right now I'm trying to figure out how to proceed. As I said, putting $3500 into it was never something I was going to do. I feel a little awkward holding her to her promise, because as stated the car is not worth that work. I had already been intending to sell it at some point and get something else that is not a 'rolling time bomb', as it were, though I doubt I would have gotten more than $2.5-3k beforehand and the dent is ... definitely not going to help matters. Just wondering the best and fairest way to proceed now.

Giving that op says it has crazy low miles its probably worth a bit more than that. But thats my point exactly, why put so much money into it when its not a benefit in the long run?

Also for op im not quoting that because Im on mobile but if I were you Id either look for a cheaper body shop if you really want to get it fixed or find a used door from a junkyard and do a door swap and get it repainted if needed. But if youre planning to sell it soon Id just live with the eye sore until you get something else and keep your money for a newer car or ask if shes willing to front the $3500 for a new car when the time comes

Please quote where I said his car was a shitbox? All that was said was that his car was older and rather than fix it, put the money towards a new car. If your poor reading skills told you that, that means we said it was a shitbox then I feel bad for you when you go into the real world. That one's a bit weird. I've had two cars totaled, newer, and the damage was at around/under ~50% car's worth.

I guess if we're looking at $3,500 just as $3,500 , maybe an insurance company would rather pay for it.

Iono if TC can afford to make payments on another car but his boss is absolute garbage
