Including playable characters, which group of Persona main cast members is superior?

Whoever you consider to be 'main' depends on your own opinion, but I'm thinking characters that are fully intertwined with the main group. So counting Marie and Kasumi, but not Metis, for example.

Personally, I think 4 has the best cast. The most fun characters that seem to be the most cohesive overall. Really helps they all feel like friends, whereas the rest are people that become friends by circumstance. P4 has a cast that all know each other, or interact in some way, and feel like a group of people that hang out with each other(which is something you see, like Chie and Yukiko in one of Marie's social links, and Teddy with Yosuke regularly), or seeing how often they all talk to each other in the side games, or get together. It's not a vibe I get with P5. Like, for example, barely anyone had contact with Yusuke in P5S and he almost doesn't make it to the reunion they had. They also go their separate ways on P5R and it doesn't feel like they want to hang out more after it...idk, a feeling I got.

And the fact that SEES has shown they kinda all stopped being friends in P4A doesn't help.

That fact adds a lot to the characters imo. Plus, they're all just fun characters. Not a single one I hate, unlike P3 and P5 having Yukari and Makoto respectively.

they felt the most "real" and relatable, from what I can remember.

Yeah. And friendly right off the bat. Didn't feel like 'ugh, I gotta work with these clowns?' in 3. 5 had a bit more friendship, but then after Ann, it didn't feel like you had a lot of 'friends'. More, just people being jerks until they accidentally become your friends due to circumstance.

P3. I prefer the more true to life dynamic that SEES had going. They were allies of circumstance that grew closer to one another through their shared struggles. Not everybody liked each other, and it was nice to see their relationships develop and watch them iron out their beefs over the course of the game.

Yeah. The P4 gang is very wholesome and fun, but the P3 crew felt more realistic. I love how their relationships evolve over time. For example, Yukari and Mitsuru basically hate each other at the beginning but are best friends by the end of it.

But this is coming from someone too dumb to solve the mystery for some reason

Lazy answer, but I think each team relates well to the vibes and themes their respective games were trying to put off.

  • P3 cast are all carrying their personal baggage and are clearly not so much friends as partners, especially early on. The harrowing journey they go on helps them to settle the baggage they're carrying, and pulls them together.
  • P4 cast are either already bonded at the game's start, or bond together over the shared goal of solving the mystery. They all have their inner demons, but they're all friends who support each-other.
  • P5 cast are social outcasts and those who have been let down by society at large in some way. They bond over a shared desire to undo the injustices done against them, and they feel like good friends by the game's end.
P5 was the most recent and the first Persona game to release since I became a fan of the series. It's my favorite in-so-much that I was there when it was fresh and was able to grow with the characters. But I can appreciate that each game is different, yet done very well.

I didn't like P4 too much. But even I gotta say it had the best cast.

Edit: one thing I really hated in regard to the cast was how they copped put Renji's sexuality. That really sticks in my craw, even now. Also how Naoto just mysteriously started becomming more femme in the dancing game sequel. Yikes, Atlus.

P4 thanks to Uncle/Cousins and Yu's situation aka being transferred student and charisma.

P1 is pure occult culture and has lack of friendships despite all characters went to same school.

P3 is almost good as P4 but MC changed a whole of storywise and forced his buddies to accept Aigis after MC's gone.

P5 is kinda hard to explain ,but all of Joker friends knew him very well even though his flashback showed how he met his buddies and fought corrupted foes.

Kanji is still bi, and you clearly understand very little about Naoto's character if you think she's 'become' anything different by P4D.

Mitsuru never hated Yukari. It was one sided hate from the latter. Mitsuru took a lot of what Yukari's verbal beatings, due to her own pain.

I really enjoyed the growth of Kanji and Naoto, and the themes of their stories. They were very well done, especially for a Japanese game that originally came out in 2008

It's a shame so many (mostly recent) P4 players simply don't get it, and just say dumb shit like "Wahhh they made Kanji bi instead of gay" or "Wahhh they didn't make Naoto trans"

I think a lot of the disconnect with Naoto is that she is a trans icon to some people even though she isn't trans.

P4 before strikers, P5 after strikers.

Sorta horseshit that 80% of the genuine interaction for the P5 cast comes in Strikers tbh. This could also be recency bias, considering I beat P4G 2 months ago and Strikers 2 days ago.

Yeah, it sucks because both have such great growth and fantastic writing, and they're boiled down to 'why didn't they tell the story I wanted them to tell?????'.

Lame.

I think Kanji's my favorite party member overall, but I really like the P3's cast deal with their baggage without much interference on MC's part. Their persona evolutions are story-based, and as a result they aren't nearly as dependent on the P3 Protag as the other groups are for their MC. Hell, you don't really get too close to half the group since they're not all that interested in hanging out with you outside of Tartarus missions. It helps them stand on their own as individuals.

I didn't vote yet. I've been playing 3psp and 5r recently, but I did really like the cast in Persona 2: Innocent Sin.

Interesting topic to read. I rarely played the spinoffs but watched some videos of them. This post doesn't have much value besides a bump, but Persona 4 and it's dark Scooby-Doo like mystery was a very fun time. Maybe I should play Golden again as I never played it much have it on steam, but busy playing 3 and 5r at the moment and w/e I do.

Like, for example, barely anyone had contact with Yusuke in P5S and he almost doesn't make it to the reunion they had.

So you've never had that one really flaky friend in your group that was hard to contact and always either late or didn't show up at all? Because that's Yusuke. He's kind of an eccentric introvert who's easily distracted by art, whether he's making it himself or just looking at it.

And as for this point, half of them graduated high school and they were ready to start the next part of their lives. They're most likely going to be moving to different places, starting different careers, and naturally drift apart just like all friend groups do after high school. If I recall they do say they're going to keep in contact with each other, though.

For real?! Heh damn I just wanted to take a look at this during a P5R session. This isn't entirely related but I like these "second banana" characters as Yousuke said once. I dig Junpei him and Ryuji. It seemed like Persona 4 Golden added way more than I expected.

Junpei(esp. around Fall season) , Mitsuru's inheritance and the entire relevance to the game, Shinjiro and Akihiko.

I guess you could say that those are still SEES stuff but I just feel like the P3 cast had more tight relevance to the plot, and character development.

I'm probably just biased cause I really enjoyed Junpei's arc.

I will say, that was handled extremely well. The stuff with Chidori. But, arguably, that sorta stuff happens too with the P4/5crew, you just don't really see much of it because the game focuses so much on Yu/Joker. They still do stuff, you just don't see it. Like in P4, you see them when they get involved with Yu, like during Marie's social link, they're off doing their own shit and they just kinda get involved then. Or Ryuji helping Ann train.

But I will say, I did enjoy the individual growth arcs of every character.
