https://www.thewrap.com/return-to-time-before-cell-phones-internet-harris-poll/

Seventy-seven percent of middle-age Americans (35-54 years old) say they want to return to a time before society was plugged in, meaning a time before there was widespread internet and cell phone usage. As told by a new Harris Poll (via Fast Company), 63% of younger folks (18-34 years old) were also keen on returning to a pre-plugged-in world, despite that being a world they largely never had a chance to occupy.
In total, 67% of respondents said theyd prefer things as they used to be versus as they are now. On the flip side, 90% saw the importance in being open-minded when it came to new tech.
But though the majority agreed that its good to be open-minded, over half also felt it was overwhelming trying to keep up with new tech. Roughly the same percentage believed tech was more divisive than uniting.

I think its so easy to look back with rose-tinted glasses.

But reality is, tech has improved life in so many ways.

Not saying that there are zero downsides to modern life, but the pros outweighs the cons.

I think things were ok up until the smartphone. Early social media was limited by needing to go to a computer to use it, which meant most people had a lot of other things to do. There was no casual checking your feeds, no uploading pics and videos instantly, etc.

I first went to Paris and the UK in 2007. I didn't have a map on a phone. I just explored. Everyone was living in the now. Phones were still for calling people. Yet I could pop in an Internet cafe if I needed to check email or whatever. I feel like that was right at the end of being able to actually experience the world.

In short fuck Steve Jobs

In what way have lives been improved by people being always plugged in? Anxiety and depression among young people is at an all time high, and the jumps correspond exactly with the rise of the smartphone

you have to read past the first sentence in the op. it mentions that a majority of young people and a majority overall feel the same way.

overall technology is a positive. social media culture is a negative imo but tech will keep charging forward regardless

Most people are thinking only as if the question was about social media specifically which it doesnt really seem to be but rather about having access to information in general.

Even social media itself is just a reflection of how fucking stupid so many people are and how many people lack self control.

It's nice to be able to research something on the spot.

Admittedly, I am getting tired of people thinking just because we all have our phones glued to us that we are inclined to take calls or reply to texts immediately.

The internet is just as much a prime source for misinformation as for genuine knowledge, so there's that

But really, the #1 problem with social media in particular is that it's all about performance, like constantly being on stage, and it just gets to be too much after a while and leads to burnout, stress, and insecurity.

Recently I've stopped carrying my phone with me when I go out.
I don't get that many calls or texts to begin with and whatever it is can wait.

I only take it if I know I'll need directions or some sort of update on whatever's happening.

The internet and social media needs to be better regulated. With restrictions put into place on tech companies on what they can and can't do. Until we as a country start addressing some of the cons of technology, while keeping the pros that benefit us and society-at-large.

A good start would be creating an internet police force capable of cracking down on hackers and scammers, while also cleaning up the World Wide Web of misinformation/disinformation posts and websites. Also another big help would be government funded programs to help people struggling with social anxiety and those addicted to their technology. Lastly, there needs to be more scientific study into technology consumption. What are the effects on a child at different ages when it comes to them interacting with cell phones, internet, social media, and even watching TV.

I remember getting my bills in the mail (postal mail). It was nice only having to pay my bills in the span of an hour after getting home from work.

With email billing, companies send you your bills at any damn time they please. You'll crawl into bed at 2300 and read an ebook for a bit...

...only to find that at 0023 in the morning, you just received your credit card bill.

And now you have the choice of paying it right then and there... or trying to get to sleep knowing that you need to take care of it the following day.

(I know that I can't fall asleep knowing I owe money.)

The internet and cell phones aren't the issue. Unregulated social media and too many Americans having zero media literacy are the bigger problem and I think it's an instance of not being able to close Pandora's Box, especially in the years that came after smartphones and residential broadband internet access becoming affordable.

Before the advent of affordable smartphones, most Americans, even dumb ones, had some semblance of media literacy and were able to easily circumnavigate around stupid shit on the web, or at least be able to take it for what it is. Nowadays you have massive swaths of Americans who don't understand the concepts of clickbait, misinformation, astroturfing and predatory advertising/media practices and give absolutely no fucks because they just want to be able to see content 24/7.
