I've never played one of these games before but y'all talking about it all the time makes me want to. I'll be playing on ps5 and probably buying a used copy on eBay. Given that I don't know one Persona game from the next what should I get?

Just skip the first two and you'll be fine. If you want to play 3 I'd wait on the remaster. Get 4 Golden or 5 Royal if you want to start from there.

As for which you'd like more: muder mystery? 4. Playing as a literal Robin Hood? 5.

Also, IMO 5's music is the best in the series.

I played a couple when they hit game pass, which is an option if you are on Xbox or PC. It wasn't my thing, but I'm not into anime.

If you've never played one, I'd start with 5 (specifically, Persona 5 Royal, rather than just the vanilla Persona 5), if only because it's the easiest game to play (in terms of quality of life and all that). If you decide you like it, then I'd move on to P4 Golden and then either P3 FES or Portable, as they have the same gameplay structure but lack some of the QoL that P5 has, and can feel a bit dated as a result.

Though... can you even buy a used copy of P5R for Ps5? I thought the only way to play it on PS5 was to get it digitally for PS4 and have the same PSN account on your PS5? I don't actually OWN a PS5 though so what do I know?

I think it's also confusing, for someone not familiar with the series, because of the spin-offs.

the games you should be checking out are: Persona 3 Portable, Persona 4 Golden, and Persona 5 Royal.

edit: I think you can only get Personas 3 and 4 digitally, but I could be wrong.

Nah, start with 3, then 4, and then 5, because then you get to see how far the games have come and how each one has been made better

If you're gonna get P5R then the PS4 version is actually superior because it has the Raidou costume. Or get PC version and mod it back in I guess.

So, 5 Royal PS4 base version is cheaper on eBay but the digital version in the PlayStation store is the ultimate edition that includes a bunch of DLC. Is the DLC good and worth having?

I'm pretty sure all the DLC is just straight up free now. My digital version was just standard edition at first, but got automatically upgraded to ultimate which meant I could get all the paid DLC for free, I'm assuming because it's the only digital option now. Not sure if that upgrade applies to physical copies, but I don't see why it shouldn't.

And yeah all the DLC is worth downloading. You get a ton of goodies that make the early game more comfortable, plus all the costume DLCs, most of which change the battle and victory music when worn by MC. The Raidou costume I mentioned before is one of the battle music changers, which is why I recommended PS4 version. Just...make sure you actually get Royal and not vanilla P5.

You can't go wrong with either! Great characters and progression systems.
