IDK how people are looking at Mario Wonder and thinking it looks like NSMB. The sound design seems a little similar but this looks completely different.

I suggest people look up some videos of NSMB and compare it to the Wonder trailer and you'll remember how bland NSMB was.

Yeah it probably looks better on a bigger screen (I watched it on mobile) so I'll reserve judgement. I will easily admit the animation work looks fantastic, it's just something about the overall visual style that looks too neat? Despite trying to come across as very chaotic?

Instead of writing a big post about Mario's aesthetics I'll just leave it at that lol

None of these are Switch 2 games. At absolute most the Peach game could wind up as cross-gen if it comes out late enough but even that seems unlikely. The Switch 2 is not especially close, we know its not in this fiscal year and practically would launch towards the end of 2024 if it even launches next year at all - I have yet to see anything that rules early 2025 out. We are talking about a system that is 16-21 months away. This Direct kinda shows that the Switch isnt done and is going to keep getting games well into 2024.

Really people overreacted to that no big games after TOTK! rumour and it never should have been taken to be anything other than referring to games of that scope and sales potential. Which is to say no new 3D Mario or Mario Kart 9 on Switch. Even then, Wonder is likely going to be critically acclaimed and sell 20m+ copies. That is a pretty huge game. There will be other Switch games announced in the future too, Im sure we will see the typical September Direct which will fill in the holes in 2024 releases. So yeah by all accounts we still have a way to go.

While it does look a lot better, it's still very clean, almost plastic-y 3D, and that's the part I don't like. For it to count as looking completely different to me, it would have to have an art style that's like, idk, Cuphead, Wario Land: Shake It, Braid, Celeste, Hollow Knight, Fez, Yoshi's Island, Mario 1-3 + World, or Kirby's Epic Yarn. Obviously not all of those fit Mario, they're just examples of how different I'd want the art style to be.

What's up with the Pokemon DLC trailer...what did we see there?
I feel like instead of concept arts we just got the in-game models and that's it...like I feel like "I have seen this before" and it feels like nothing new was shown..?
Showing me 4 new human characters and returning Pokemon is not really selling it imo

The SMRPG remake was probably the most interesting thing there. Lotta bundles/packages of old games. I don't know enough about DQM to know if I should be hyped about that game or not. I've played every mainline DQ but X. Tactica still looks hideous graphically, and what they've shown of the combat especially feels lacking and unpolished at best.

I haven't played baseline Mario (or Sonic) game in like a decade at this point. Don't care about yet another WW. Don't care about Pikmin.

Though the SMRPG remake is not something I'm ever spending $60 on and I don't know if it'd ever go low enough as a Mario game for me to actually buy it.

Man, a 2D Mario that actually looks original and interesting? Finally.

Agreed with this wholeheartedly. NSMBU felt like they were finally starting to tap into the latent greatness 2D Mario could be, but the "New" aesthetics were just getting so stale by then. Wonder is what the series needed

SMRPG remake looks cool and happy for the fans, just personally I found it to be one of the weakest Mario RPGs. But you know, that's me playing a 1996 game in 2018 with no nostalgia goggles. If they add enough, I'll definitely consider playing it.

But I'm more likely to pick up the new WarioWare than that. Love that Nintendo always doubles down on their overlooked series near the end of a system's life. Alas, they will never do F-Zero lol

Only 1 Mario Maker per console generation so we have to wait for Switch 2.

god you know, I think it really might be the sound design playing a huge part. the visual aesthetic is still a little "inject a soul into NSMB" but they're clearly trying and there's plenty good things about it. but NSMB's sound design is so fucking annoying and a lot of it is in here: "doos" instead of "bah"s, wacky powerup music, and on top of that I immediately hate the fucking yelling flower.

And in retrospect the reason I'm being nitpicky about this is because the 3D Marios have such a good mix of personality and recognizability, even the ones like Sunshine that I don't really like I have to respect.

Despite not really playing a NSMB since Wii I want to give this one a chance, it's got an uphill battle though.

I agree about the sound design of NSMB and Wonder. Not a fan.

Disliking a game's sound design isn't being nitpicky. Sound is just as important as visuals to express the soul of a game.
