Quest 64 has hints of what could have been a good game, especially in the magic and combat systems.

It was called Quest 64. And it looked kind of like OoT and one of the few rpgs for the system. People just got it and assumed it was good.

I was too young to think "This kind of sucks" so i just enjoyed it without thinking. Later when i could think of how it actually sucks, i cant help but thinking about enjoying it anyways.

Super Mario RPG was the first RPG game I've ever played, and I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Hell, it was probably what gave me a good intro to how turn-based RPGs back then work in general, before playing other RPG games later down the line.

Also, I will argue that even as an RPG newbie back then, the game still had enough of a curve that unless you were just going through the motions, some fights would prove to be difficult if you weren't ready for them.

ALSO, there are a load of obscure quirks with the game that the player is never told unless you got a guide on hand back then or the internet (the most immediate I can think of is pressing a button upon taking incoming physical damage to reduce it, which can also save party members from instant-kill attacks.

I didn't recall if it talked about defending attacks in the timed hits part, only about how you can enhance your own (damn near all) attacks with it.
Also, mind, it's been several years since i touched the game.

Still, there's a lot of mess the game has the player would never find out casually playing, unless by sheer chance (or a lucky jump someplace).

But yeah, game might be slightly easier than the typical RPG of around then, but definitely not shallow.

Pokemon XY (red and blue is litereally designed so that middle school children can beat it without too much difficulty. Xy was designed to be easier and more in the players favour than that), Golden Sun series(the final boss of 1 and 2 involves a strategy of buffing yourself and healing. This is viewed as a GIGANTIC difficulty spike next to every other boss and enemy in the game)

This basically wins it. It was literally created as a "beginner's first RPG" and they went...STUPID crazy with that idea. No exploration, set fights, no grinding, and I'm pretty sure you're given very few battle options.

Who cares if it's the easiest?

By the time I got SMRPG in '96 I was in my 20's and I'd been playing computer RPGs such as Ultima, Wizardry, and Might and Magic for almost a decade.
Guess what? I loved SMRPG. It was fun, an interesting twist on Mario and RPGs (gasp! Imagine that) and had concepts that weren't even in pc rpgs yet. (adding more to do during your turn in a turn based rpg other than just picking an ability)

^This. It wasn't in turn based pc rpgs. At least, not the ones I'd played, which included Ultima, Phantasie, DnD, M and M, Wizardry, Bards Tale, Magic Candle, Forgotten Realms, Realms of Arkania and Darklands just to name what I can remember off the top of my head.
In fact, I thought it was so fun that pc rpgs should start using it.

FF4 is pretty special.
It was first released in Japan. Then it got an Easy Edition released that renamed pretty much every item/equipment/spell, simplified the text and added some story. It also made the battles easier.
Then we got the NA version that nerfed the game even more and removed some plot.

I mean if you want to play a more challenging RPG there's always Shin megami Tensei 3:Nocturne. Hard mode is really fun without going in the too much bs route except the tutorial . It's on switch too!

Most JRPG'S in general, especially the new ones... were made to be easier. Some give you multiple save states, others give you the option to change the difficulty at any time, some have DLC's sooooooooo OP'ed it destroys the games difficulty no matter how easy/hard the game is, there are even some games that are very fortunate with their drops/looting mechanics to the point where you'll find something that will carry you for the majority of the game.

And then you have compile heart games, where they usually have a waifu system (Moero Chronicles, Mary Skelter)... You keep giving them shit and they'll become so strong they learn new skills or something and that'll make those games X's easier.
